Son of "An Unusual 1971D For You Ike Geeks"

Well - that was weird.

Anyway, picked up this unusual Ike today. Unusual because it's so clean. Only two hits can be seen under magnification, one behind the ear, one very light one by the second 1 on the date. The coin also sports an unusually light strike. Particularly noticeable on the obverse on IN GOD WE TRUST, and to a lesser degree on the date, which is very flat in hand. On the reverse you see that UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is weak, as are the eagle's head and wing. There is no signs of wear at all on the coin, which is very lustrous and covered with a nice mellow gold patina. What kind of grade do you guys think this would get given high condition/low strike quality?

I would take a wild guess at 64. My line of thinking is PCGS would not want such a weak strike in one of their 65 or above holders.

Weak strike or not that's still a nice coin!

My opinion is MS64. Reasoning the same as the previous poster. The weak strike on the reverse. It is a weakly struck date anyway, but this one is weaker than most. The obverse, however, looks about the same as the 6 I recently had graded that all came back MS64. All were as clean as that, if not cleaner and had blazing luster. Still a nice coin though.

  • You guys are confirming what I think would happen with this coin. It certainly has the luster blast to hold either a PQ64, or even a 65 grade, but you just can't get away from the fact that it has such a light strike at the bottom of the coin. It's a shame, because it's a pretty piece.
