How sane is it...

to attempt to put together a complete set of Canadian and British coins? By complete set I mean all denominations and all years.

If you're suggesting I am insane by trying to do that, you are correct. I am. At least I know it.

  • Actually, I was referring to my newest venture. I have 3 boxes of side by side 2x2 holders sitting next to my desk right now. 2 are devoted to Canadian and 1 to British. I want to try and do this eventually.

    I'm with you, HC2.

I don't know if any person or organization has ever accomplished that, including the British Museum. But I could be wrong! In any case, that would be no reason not to try!!!

    Have fun!

I guess it would be possible - but I'm trying to put together just the dollars from 1935 on and when you hit the 1940 - 1950 years you need a huge bank account - the 1948 dollar alone is very hard to come by and expensive. Alas and alackimage

By complete, I'm assuming you at least mean milled coinage, i.e. 1672 forward. Then I'll see ya in 50 years (if I'm still kicking then)! image

I started this madness just looking at every Victorian farthing in near gem unc. and higher, if possible. It's not very.......and it will be time consuming (and purse consuming) to say the least. Then came silver and then comes gold!! image

If your average grade standard is low enough, it's possible, but some dates are unobtainable in basically any grade.

Anyway, I'm now stuck on achieving GOAL #1 of the ultimate Victorian TYPE set. Whatever I stumble across from there on out is gravy.

Oh yeah, my second madness is assembling a totally complete set of business strike tanners from 1672 to the present in gem plus condition. Will it ever happen? Not for very many years to come, and then there's Geo II and the many, many types within one reign.......arghhhhhh!

  • Well, looks like I'm gonna go for it. If it takes me 50 years, that sounds great. I am not religiously persuing these sets, just adding to them as I find coins. I have obtained a lot of my coins so far rthrough trades and some low end purchases. I am having fun with these 2 sets. image
