Cool Color 1964(d) PCGS-MS68 Kennedy Trades Hands

wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 16,979 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just noticed the #1 MS Kennedy set holder added the 1964(d) PCGS-MS68 Kennedy to the set today. That is the cool color coin that "MS68" from our boards slabbed a while back. Congratulations to MS68 (Dave Schweitz) on the private treaty of the coin - I suspect the most expensive regular issue MS Kennedy Half to ever trade hands to date. I also think the series can "heat up" a bit in the years ahead.

What are your thoughts on the MS series? image

Congratulations to Richard on adding this little gem to his set. I think it's the most beautiful Kennedy I've seen to date. I agree that this is a good series for the future, hope it stays quiet for a couple more years for upgrades.

I absolutely love this series. Not only are there metal changes (90%; 40%, clad) but there are surface changes (Mint State and Matte (98-S). Slight design changes throughout the years have added appeal.
This set, when displayed in its entirety, is eye catching. Add color, such as the MS68 64-D (I've seen and it is "all there" and thensome) and it's difficult to understand why more Collectors don't chase after this series.

It'll have its day, no doubt. Probably when the coin/denomination itself is retired.
  • This is a great set to go after. I'm doing mine in 66 ( buget constraints ), but so far everyone has been under 40.00. I sure hope it stays under the radar a little longer. I just got a hard to get 91P from a board member for a good price. 24 more to goimage

  • There were a larger than normal number of Kennedy's auctioned off on Ebay late FEB. I see a buying opportunity when a bunch go up at once.
Larger supply same demand prices tend to go down. Overall prices we very held very well, although there were some bargains.
I wanted the 91-d and put a strong bid in for it. The best bargains for me were the 74 and 90d. The 90d has about the same 66/67 pop as the 90p and 91d.
With the steep increase for 67s the 66's seem to be a better value. I can get 10 for the same price as a 67 and someday one might upgrade.
I cut out the prices realized for 70-91 ms66. Number of bids next to the price.

It was upgraded from an MS67 in May of last year.

I guess he bought it back from himself when it was auctioned last year?

Edit: Checking I see it was a "not sold". Since it was bid to about $12,000, I'd guess that you're right that it's the most expensive sale so far in the series.

    The coin:

From what I've heard from those who've seen it, the color is much better in-hand. Not surprising, considering Heritage's weak imaging skills.

There does appear to be some market strength returning to these. I've seen several examples of strong to very strong money as of late, in both circulation strikes and proofs. A couple of examples: A 1976-S Clad in 70DCAM sold about a week ago for $5600; a 1976-S Silver in MS68 sold a couple days go for $767. Check some of the recent sales on eBay - there are quite a few surprising results.

A handful of new serious and moneyed players have stepped in to the market.

What I thought was neat was that the coin was slabbed reverse up image

Wow! I've made two myself... sold one years back for $475 and was most happy with that. Kept the other in my collection. May need to re-think that move!

I like Kennedys too.....image....But only in MS, as I have absolutely NO EYE for proofs!
