1961 Topps checklist question

I am going through my raw '61 Topps to decide which to grade. I notice I have two varieties of #98 checklist cards. One has "check list" in yellow letters and the other in red letters. Does anyone know the relative rarity and if there is a premium for the red one? It is well centered with slight corner touches...most likely PSA 7 or else PSA 6.

    Reggie ,...............I am not a expert on the '61 set , but I looked up the pop report on this card , and this is what I found : #98 Yellow Letters, Black 98......( 10 ) Psa 7 and ( 13 ) Psa 8's....no 9's .............................Yellow Letters , White 98 .........( 7 ) Psa 7 and ( 10 ) Psa 8 with ( 2 ) Psa 9,s..................Red Letters ( 3 ) Psa 7 and ( 2 ) Psa 8's , only a pop of five cards graded on the Red Letters !!!!!! There is also something called a "Use Varieties " #98 which is very plentiful in graded form ! Hope this helps till a 1961 collector can help you more !.............Robby

their are 3 varietys of card 98 61 topps checklist 2 yellow letters and the red....the yellow lettered one's have the number on the back 2 diferent ways....1 the number is white on black and the other is black number on white, as for the scarcity in psa graded i have no idea....however in all price guides they are valued abt the same.....the red one seems a tad harder to find though centered...i hope that helps also.. the 61 set has 2 other checklists that have varietys as well one spells luis aparicio as louis and then corrected as luis and yet another on the reverse has the copyright info in 2 spots.
    Good for you.
  • Thanks for the response. I also noticed the pop report which shows only 5 red ones graded. But there is no indication of a premium price in the SMR. Compare this fact with the 1958 Topps yellow letters and it's still confusing to me. Seems like there is an error in the pop report or the SMR.

  • Reggie,

I've been concentrating on a PSA registry set for the 1961's for just over a year now. I really love this set and for what its worth, I don't have a strong desire to collect every variation of the cards that have them. In other words, I'm happy with any one of the #98 checklist cards in PSA 8 condition for my set.

From what I've gleaned from the message boards, it seems that most collectors feel the same way and don't get too worked up over variations of the cards. Also, I've noticed that sellers, understandably so, will make a big deal of a variation they are selling. But I just don't see the demand from collectors in most cases.

I would say that if collecting the variations means a lot to you, then have the card graded for your personal enjoyment... not with the expectation of selling it for big $$$$.

    Hope this helps.
    Tom

  • Reggie, I've been collecting the 61 topps set for over 4 years. The checklists are hard to come by in hi grade of 9, no 10's for any of the 6 different lists. With about 10-11 different variations no 10's...
All are easy to find in 7-8. If you're submitting for your own set, go fo it. If you're submitting to sell, only send in cards that look like 10's and maybe you'll get a 9. Checklists in 9 are big$$$$. I only have two checklists in 9 in my set. Rob, the best 61 set, by far, has 4 in 9.
    I need 4 in 9 and Rob needs 2.

The 61 set doesn't have a master and basic. The variations all count for the same weight. I don't care which variation the card is, just the highest grade.
