First off, thats a pretty sweet auction for a buyer. I might throw a bid on it. Only problem though is there is way too many OC's and a big run of PSA 5's in the middle. The submitter is going to lose his a$$ on this. If somebody is going to submit an entire set like that all at once (or in a couple invoices), they should make sure they know what they are looking at and get 90%+ 9's or better. Looks like somebody opened a factory set and and submitted all of them without looking. I doubt he'll do that again. My bet is that he'll end the auction early when there is only one day left and the bidding is at $500.

Steve -- My sentiments exactly. This is a definite candidate for an early ending.

Based on the cert #'s, it looks like they were all submitted in 1 shot...jay

I agree with the posts so far. Why would someone spend the money? - 660 cards x 5.00 per card grading = $3,300, assuming this was done under the special, does not include s&h and insurance. Obviously the cards weren't looked at closely prior to submission. Maybe he got a "good deal" by calling PSA and arranging a lower cost per card, but unless his cost was under $1.00 per card, I can't see this one being profitable.

What's with all the N/A terms of cards - does that mean a grading # is not applicable.
as if they are NOT all graded, much less not all PSA 10?

1967and 1973 Topps baseball wantlists (any condition) welcome. Once had the #14 ATF 1967 set. Yet another collector like skylaneflyer, gimel1 who made it to the completion of 1967 only to need the money more than the company of 609 close friends.

    KK,
It would be tempting to jump in for the 9's and 10's. A few observations, some already noted:

    1) title - why make it sound like it's all psa 10? Strike 1 against the seller.
    2) description -

<< <i>Just a few cards away from an absolute perfect set! >>

    - come again?..........earth to seller? Not a bad start, but thats about all.
    3) money - a lot of coin was thrown psa's way for this set; a set that will sell for a small fraction of investment, regardless how it's sold.
    4) sequence of grades - I'm seeing groups or clusters of 5's, 8's, 9's, and 10's that are close together - do you think that's normal for a submission like this or graders............ok, I won't go there.
    5) I'm tempted.............Larry, you out there???
    - pause while I put in a bid-
    6) Ok Larry, your turn............

N/A means there's no 'variety' of the card. This column is just part of the submission form.

He probably copied the 'submission status' info from his invoice and pasted it into the ebay description area..........what's why the N/A is showing up.

What is the best deal that anybody has heard of PSA getting on a large submission like that. If I could do it cheap, I have an 85 Donruss factory sealed set that I might try considering the way this auction is going. It is at $830 with 6 days left. What is this going to bring - $1500? $2000? I would definitely break it open and look them over first. Comments?

    KK,

Good luck! I first thought Nailman22 was a carpenter who was going to use the slabs as roofing shingles. (Actually, you could with all the 8's and lower)

    Frankhardy,

Don't even go there. I'm having, along with others, grading problems with easier donruss issues, let alone the black boarded 85's. I recently cracked a 85 factory set...........no way would I submit those in bulk, even after eyeing them. If your still curious, send a small group of the best-of-the-best you have and see what happens.

I have no idea on quantities for discount, but I doubt it would be too much for a one-shot deal.

With all of the 5's, 8's, and 9OC's in there, is this really a winning proposition? I have seen 10's from this set sell for as little as $30, and is there really any market for the 9's alone on Ebay? Just doesn't seem worth the almost $1K it is up to now...

I counted 71 10's and even at 30 each thats 2130.00 so right now its a bargain. Even if you blow the 9's out at 5 bucks the deal can definately work.

Sort of going along with what Stump is saying. . .

Count up all the 9s and 10s with NQ. . .how much would grading fees be on that group? And that would get you what percentage of the set? Pretty high, I'd think - esp to get all at one pop.

And if you're building an 83D set in 9 and 10, is there a better way to do it? I mean you can pick up a factory set case which is like 16 sets for $600. Assuming you get one 9 or 10-worthy example of each card in the set, grading fees on 660 cards at $4.50 per is almost $3k.

This seems to me like an awesome deal for the buyer and if I had that kind of cash, I'd be on it like cops on doughnuts. I'm going to do an 83D set, but will have to spread it out over time as my funds and priorities allow, unfortunately.

King - there are some 8s with value in the set (Boggs and Gwynn rookies, the HOFers). If you're buying this set and want to blow cards like those out, I'd be interested in buying any you want to sell cheaply (plus some of the not-quite HOF level player 8s).

FYI...I recently asked Customer Service (not Joe) if I could get a "deal" on a 1,000-card one shot submission. The answer was a quick, unfettered 'NO!" It was implied, however, that if I were to do this on a "regular" basis, Joe might listen.

So, my guess is that this one went at $6 a card (unless he sent in three or four sets of 83 Donruss at once!).

Meanwhile, this one loooks to be headed north of $2K...

This auction ended at $1884.88 or about $2.86 per card. I wonder how the seller feels about this endeavor? I also wonder what Mickey is planning to do with the cards. Over time, I guess a lot of the higher graded cards can be sold at a profit, but what about the rest of the cards? I'm still not sure that this will be profitable, even at $2.86 per card.

    Virtualizard...

Hey JEB...What do you think of this plan...

Start at the hammer price $1884.88

Sell the (329) 8's and below as a lot on eBay (Starting bid at $329.00 ($1 a piece.) they will sell..)
    Reduce your investment to $1555.88.

Put the (256) 9's up to the Registry board for $6.00 ea. They will sell.
    Reduce your investment to $19.88.

Put up (1) PSA 10 for $19.88. (A Yankee or player set card...).
    Reduce your investment to $0.00

Put the remaining (74) PSA 10's in your pocket....For nothing.....

Of course, there is shipping and packaging dollars, but I think Mickey's made a VERY GOOD buy...

    (Wish I had 'em...LOL...)

    Larry,

You may be right. But, the main point I have been trying to get across throughout this thread boils down to whether or not it was a good idea to grade the whole set to begin with. Even if everything did sell for what you have suggested, I still think it will be less than what it cost to get this set graded.

    JEB.
  • KING KELLOGGKING KELLOGG Posts: 1,158 ✭✭✭
    JEB...

Yeah...No doubt it was a nutcracker for the seller. I wouldn't submit it that way and I'm thinking neither would you or anybody on this board........I got your point......

Now, just think about those raw sets hanging around the house.........Kinda' makes you think about breaking a few seals on those factory sets, doesn't it???
