Question on silver coin surfaces

I've recently gotten into collection Mercury dimes and have a question for the forum.
I've noticed that regardless of the strike, hits or marks on the surface, most unc.
silver coins seem to have either a mirrorlike sparkly surface or a frosty hazy surface.
Under a microscope, the haze seems to consist of little microscoping bumps while
the sparkly stuff looks like parallel stripes. Can anyone comment on why or how these
types develop.

  • Most likely caused by how the particular die was prepared. Raised lines are made from die polishing. The metal flows into the die during the pressing operation and these lines show up raised under magnification.
