    Hi Al,

I find the best source for these are prices realized at major auction sites. Quite a few sell on Heritage, so that would be a good start. Other than that, can't say I've ever seen prices listed for them otherwise.

    Cheers,

    hey Dennis

that's a sweet looking, frosty example of the thick medal. i see these online and at shows but have hesitated to make a purchase without having any pricing information. a seller at Cleveland Shows had one each thick/thin last fall but they weren't that attractive despite what seemed like a good price for MS62 at around $120, ANACS or NGC. i opted to search and look at the medals for awhile. at that time i did obtain some pricing history that a dealer had from TeleTrade, but that's six months old.

one thing i've noticed about the medals is that with the thin type, all eight of the corners aren't generally struck-up well on anything below MS64, they appear rounded on most of what i see. that's isn't a problem with the thick type due to the increased planchet size. and toning, not many of these are toned to anything more than gray and i assume many have been cleaned at one time or another.

the one i've pictured is the thick variety with moderate tone and a nice strike, no rounding at the corners and minimal marks. i call it MS63 from the picture and wonder what i should offer.

as a treat for everybody, while checking the Heritage archives, i came across a few gold proof examples they've auctioned and linked this one which has a Bass pedigree from ANACS. i think it's astonishing to have something like this with the traceable ownership and actual rarity as explained in the description sell for so low!!!!! talk about a bargain.

Thanks for the link to the gold Norse medal. I wasn't even aware of it.

Is pricing similar for the thick and thin medals?

here's some pictures of a medal with a similar design. it's a So-Called Dollar from 1910, HK-390. Vikings are hard not to like, they always make me think of the Grand Poobah!!

    Hi Keets,

I also inquired a couple of weeks ago about the current prices for Norse Medals. I picked up a Thick version on Teletrade last September in PCGS 65 ( very white coin ) for $525. Recently picked up a NGC 65 - Thin - from Bill Johnson in Nevada, for $1,600. This Thin variety is a whole lot scarcer than the Thick. The coin I received is the best looking Thin I have ever seen, its basically blast white ( probably conserved at NCS first ).

I am sure that I overpaid for both, as the published prices for these medals are few and far between. I did check Heritage's web site and found quite a few Thick's ... and a few gold medals... but no Thins. I soon realized that I actually did overpay for the Thick, as it goes for $250 to $350 in MS 65. (Live and Learn). Before I shelled out the money for the Thin, I tried to get a handle on the true value. Noone was able to help.

I hope this bit of information helps you.
