Before people realize that hype is not a guarantee for prolonged success and/or prior to any scandal or decline.

Well, the best time would naturally be at peak value. The trick is figuring out when that is, because the peak only stands out when prices start to slip, and by that time, it's no longer the peak. Generally, just track ebay trends closely, accounting for bad auctions (those that end at 3 AM on a Tuesday, have typos in the title, poor feedback, etc.), and when you see little or no more upward movement, sell. Of course, sometimes prices go back up again. Witness guys like A-Rod. His cards have had 3 or 4 peaks in the past decade, each one higher than the previous one. But he's unusual in so many ways. So the real answer to your question is,"When you can get a price you are comfortable with."

BTW, this thread would be better off moved to the "Sports Cards & Memorabilia Forum".
