  • Eagle, Eagle, Eagle. The next best thing would be Saflip 2X2 non-pvc flips. Third would be cotton liners inside of 2X2 paper envelopes. Everything else is worthless, imo.

Intercept is not a valid holder, for a few good reasons. Eagle is the best, for sure. The only set-back for Eagle is that they do not work well for thin coins, but we developed a workaround for that problem.

Finally shot: just say NO to staples and PVC.

I like these the best, just got my first shipment of them.

    Coin World Holders

They also make the Premier line, which are the same size as PCGS holders:

  • The Coin World holders look pretty cool. How do they work? How do you mount a coin in them?

Update: never mind, there's a movie

I have an Eagle album for my Ike collection. Very nice, but loading it up was pretty time consuming.

  • Buffalo nickels work well in Eagle holders. The CW holders are okay, but a bit too bulky for my tastes. The Eagles are completely inert and are thicker than the coin, thereby suspending the coin in an inert environment. This is important if you store coins in 2X2 boxes, otherwise the coins rub against each other. That's why I dislike staple holders and flips.

Whitman plastic holders are my favorite.

You lay the coin down in one half of the Coin World holder, then press the insert over it. Pretty easy. I like the Coin World holders because I store all my coins in slab boxes, and this way I can store my raw coins the same way I do with the slabbed coins.

I really don't care for Eagle holders. The few that I had tried for silver dollars came apart easily at the most inopportune times.

Yes, I forgot to mention that Eagle Holders are terrible (useless) when it comes to dollar sized coins. I use Saflips for Morgans, Bust, Seated, etc.

What is an 'Eagle' holder? And a Saflip 2x2 non-pvc flip? And why is an Intercet 'not a valid holder'?

I've been looking at other options for a several months now, but I have not found the definitive solution to storing coins that accomplishes all of my goals:

    1) Neutral long term storage that won't grow some kind of fungus
    2) Allows novices to look at them without having to remove raw coins from paper envelopes (and eliminates the resulting fear of expensive raw coins rolling under refridgerators).
    3) Mechanically safe, so that putting them in and taking them out doesn't result in damage.

    Eagle Holders Web Site

Saflip manufactures inert 2X2 flips for coins. They look just like the ubiquitous PVC flips, only they are not loaded with oil. they are very safe for long term storage, in my experience/opinion. The Intercepts are too bulky, too expensive and they have not been proven to be safe. I have seen a few threads on this forum that documented that coins became hazy after being stored in an Intercept album. The Eagle holders to have their drawbacks, however. They do not work well for dollar sized coins or thin planchet coins.

Cotton liners within a paper envelope (EAC style) are great for storage, but ONLY if the coins are not transported often. Otherwise the coins slide within the cotton and, while it's not terrible, it can't be healthy for the coin.

The worst holders are: stapled 2X2 mylar holders and PVC flips. The little snap together Whitman holders are so pathetic that I do not even consider them coin holders. These are the hard, clear plastic holders that allow the coin to bounce around in the holder. I have seen so many great coins ruined by Whitman snap holders. They also make year set holders in the same style. Worst holders ever made.

JadeRareCoin - I don`t know why the link in your last post didn`t work as it didn`t work for me. It should have worked since it is the right address. In case it doesn`t work for anyone else, here`s another link to the same place that JadeRareCoin pointed out. http://www.eaglecoinholders.com/catalog/

I don't like those eagle holders at all, but their pages for them fit the Whitman holders perfectly! That is the way my collection is stored.

Are referring to the snap together Whitman 2X2 acrylic holders???

    1. I take multiple digital images of the coins first.
    2. Wrap in multiple layers of anti-tarnish watch papers.
    3. Insert into cotton pouches, which are then slipped into the archival-quality (sulfur-free) 2x2 paper envelopes.
    4. Placed in the Intercept boxes, and then inside a bank vault in a tightly sealed container with the appropriate amount of dessicant.

Works for me. No adverse affects noted after 3-4 years.

Note: This is essentially how the Watt estate coppers were stored for 200+ years, namely, in tissue papers (most likely old watch papers, and then sealed into silver-lined brass shells. Net results. Many proofs and otherwise receiving grades of 67 and 68.

  • MacCrimmon, I like your set-up. As I stated in an earlier post to this thread, cotton liners are great if the coins are not transported often. Otherwise they slide around in the holders.

    Intercept horror story

the Intercept products just don't make much sense to me. I don't buy the whole NASA story. But, in all fairness, I have never owned or even touched an Intercept product.
