I just submitted a small group of 1938-D/S nickels from an original roll. I think I will see them in about 2 or 3 months.

does pcgs designate 38 d/s now?
I thought only ANACS and NGC did that out of the big 3

Editted: whoopsimage I just checked and see that pcgs does designate the d/s. Its all those other d/d varieties that they don't.

My experience with PCGS on Buffalo nickels is that they are pretty accurate. You can tell me that the 3rd party grading services don't take strike into account but I've seen a lot of good strike Buffalos in high grade PCGS holders than soft strikes. Just my opinion.

I'm much better on morgans, buffalo nickels on the other hand have so much going on with strike, marks and that VERY subjective eye appeal. What is needed for a full strike buffalo, obv and rev.

I was looking at the rev for a fuller face, split tail and back leg.

What else should I be looking at???

Obverse problem areas: periphery, specifically LIBERTY running into rim. Also, hair detail above ribbon and even ribbon detail on lower grade MS and branch mint '20's.

Reverse problem areas: tail on flank (split?), hir detail on shoulder and head (shoulder detail is a biggie), and, of course, the all important horn. Full horn should show in grades of VF and up, though you would be amazed at how many high grade '20's branch mint buffalos don't have a full tip!
