Observation: There are a lot of new style NGC slabs around

Given that these slabs with the new alphanumerics have been around less than a year, it seems that a great majority of NGC coins that I have browsed is in one. Are there that many coins around that have not previously been graded? That many regraded/upgraded? Are all the old style holdered coins in strong hands and put away?

I've seen a lot of them at shows Robert. As near as I can tell - dealers want to get stuff graded, but don't want to wait 4 months to get it back!

That is the number one reason we use NGC.....2nd is the great service. image

  • The two dealers that I patronize most frequently, and who submit quite a few coins, have all but abandoned PCGS in favor of NGC. The reasons given to me were speed and quality of grading, and the customer service and accessibility of the higher-ups, if there were a question or problem. The only PCGS submissions they're doing are for customer requests.

Most of the dealers and collectors I talk with up here have been using NGC, or have switched to NGC. No one can tie up money on a 90 day submission, CONSISTENTLY, and operate a business. Too much money gone for too long for most smaller, or medium sized establishments to function properly. The larger cash flow operations may not be affected as much with the wait, but I heard one larger dealer up here moaning and groaning with concerns on a $50,000 outlay of material with pcgs, and the delays with the submission.

I sent 19 coins to NGC under a modern submission and got them back in 3 weeks! (I have 3 orders at PCGS that were submitted earlier and I'm still waiting on).

3 of the 19 came back as 70's, plus they graded a 1962 proof cent that PCGS BB for questionable color.

But I did get 2 BB's that came from a 1956 proof set I had with an extra nickel in it. - a 1956 10c toned as Environmental Damage and a 1956 5c with a rim nick (I guess the other nickel dinged it)
