Gold bullion...where to buy just ONE coin?

I know Tulving has the best prices, but I don't want to buy 5 coins, just one. Where can I buy a one ounce gold bullion coin for the best deal?
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."

Suggestion: instead of a bullion piece, why not buy a PCGS AU55 $20 Gaudens for around $450? IMHO It's Prettier+less downside risk if gold drops.image

  • nankraut - that is an excellent suggestion! Pretty coin, gold, and numismatic value. Far better than a bullion coin.

Looks like current retail sell price is in the $435-445 range via WSM or KITCO.

You should be able to buy one off the forum for a better price. Post a want ad on the BST forum and see what skakes out. I too would recommend the MS63 Saint as a better coin with more leverage than straight bullion. Forum member and dealer JB Stevens responded to my BST request for Mint State 64/65 Saints and filled a nice order for me.

nankraut has the right idea. For a little more $ you are buying more than just the gold + you are getting a nice numismatic value for little premium.

If you have a relationship with your dealer, ask him. I get this kind of stuff in all the time on trade deals. Case in point I just handled over 200 Exf/AU $20 Libs which were all sent to me for several separate trade deals for better Numismatics. I'm about to take in 50 generic MS-63 St G's and 20 generic $10 Indians on a similar deal for a few early gold coins.

I personally don't chase the bullion or bullion related/generic gold but it does come in from time to time and lately with a pretty high degree of frequency as trade in's. ( Hmmmmm) I'm expecting this week for example a few MS-69 graded ( why?) modern eagles that for some unknown reason, certain dealers recommend to new people coming into the hobby and I am getting them as part of a trade/liquidation in which case I will blow them out for whatever the wholesale of the day is. If you knew me for example, I would let you buy one as I just did for a friend of mine who only wanted one of each and let me know his intentions/wants months ago.

So your best bet for future reference is to develop a relationship with your dealer ( or find a new one to do so with) and then you'll have no hassle in doing these kinds of things and will buy at the best possible price too.

  • Thank you all for the advice. I was actually (I know, perish the thought--I hate foreign coins!) considering buying a gold Maple Leaf or Chinese Panda because they are 24k gold. I'm not really interested in speculating in gold, I'd just like to have the feel of one ounce of pure gold in my hands. St. Gaudens double eagles are unbelievably gorgeous (my dream coin is a high relief in MS63--who has $20k I can borrow?!

At this point though I'm kinda thinking I'd like to own just one ounce of pure gold. Just because I think it would be neat! I love the design on U.S. gold bullion coins, I just wish they'd use 24k gold =(
