lol minty i heard that the last 10% can be a beotch!! Good luck in your quest!
    Good for you.
  • eric- that is remarkable. i'd bet you'll see the aaron ia in psa 9 before you see a schall ia or a grote in psa 9, the fred kendall doesn't seem like a walk in the park either. i had a horde of 72's that i had been going through over the past months. 6 kendalls, 4 grotes, 3 houk, 4 robertson ia , 6 foli's- ALL badly o/c with alot them being miscut . of the 5 schall ia only 1 was close to 65/35- submitted it for an 8 along with the evans ia....sorry.

i listed a psa 9 1/1 ollie brown on ebay this week. NOT an auction though. i put a BIN on it for what it would take for me to part with it... i don't want anyone to be offended by the price, selling the card would help allow me to submit my remaining gradeable 72's and some 71's without expending what's left of my monthly budget on grading............jim

EO> The Schaal IA does not exist in PSA 9 NQ. Considering how hard it is to find this card in PSA 8 NQ, I won't say it will be impossible but after searching many thousands of 1972s in the last four years I think this is a card we may never see in a 9 NQ holder.

Similar cards in this respect are the Cleon Jones IA, Barton IA, Schaal IA, Reds RC, Grote, & Koosman IA because of consistent centering issues. Then Ted Abernathy because of registration and surface issues.

This doesn't include the cards with pops of 1 or 2 where you don't have the one or two. Among those are some very tough cards. You've done a pehnominal job getting to 90% and your struggle indicates just how tough a large group of cards are to find in top grade.

  • mike,

i just remembered about the BARTON IA. the one i had ended up grading a PSA 6 (it is probably the best i've seen in regard to centering)

if you want it just pm your address....jim

jack> If the centering is good and the corners are nice, a 6 usually indicates a surface wrinkle or exceptional surface wear.

jim> I have a Barton IA in a 7 NQ right now. Centering is nice, just some corner touches dropped it. Still looking for an 8 but I know it's a toughie.

  • Congrats EO! Amazing! This set at 787 cards seems beyond most collectors comprehension. The scope of building the big set is the furthest thing from instant gratification. Many have tried; few have conquered. Best of Luck.

Just a few humurous side notes. About four months ago I walked into a card store that had 2 800 count boxes of pretty nice 1972 Topps cards. (Condition was NRMT+ on average give or take a half grade). I decided to go through these with a few of the tough cards I remembered from miscellaneous chat here on the boards in mind.
Lo and behold I come across a run of 7 Paul Schaal IA's. Gulp!!! I soon felt like I was paying some form of 7 card draw asI squeezed out each successive Schaal IA waiting for that mint beauty.....bottom line....I'm still waiting. Every single Schaal IA was seriously OC anywhee from 80/20 to 95/5 allin the same direction! Needless to say I took the best one just for kicks. If it wasnt OC the card quality was a weak PSA 8. It came back from PSA a straight 5 on a "no qualifiers" invoice. Anybody want it for their set can PM me.
In that same lot I got back a nice Fred Kendall PSA 7 if anyone is interested in that as well.

    Mike,

Sent u an email. Guess my overpaying for that Reed card had the desired effect, all sorts of tough to find gems coming out of the wordwork now lol...

    Eric
  • that foli is without a doubt the finest i've ever seen.

jackstraw> I use a Umax Vista 6400 scanner with my Apple PowerBook. On cards with a white border, I put a piece of black posterboard on top as the background. I scan it in at 150dpi then do my cropping in Photoshop. Resize it to 100 or 125dpi depending on how much detail I want to show on the web site.

Eric> While the Reed is a tough 9, it really isn't that tough overall. There are 26 PSA8s and at the Sun Times show this weekend, I saw two or three more raw examples that were lock 8s. The Foli IA on the other hand is a darned tough card even in PSA8. This is the first raw example I've seen that wasn't centered somewhere around 90/10. The Foli IA ranks up with the Wills IA and the Baker in terms of us seeing a couple more 8s trickling out along with a 9 or two, but those are still VERY tough cards to find in PSA8 quality or better. And whether we like it or not, the fact that Foli is a Met in the 72T issue is a factor. The Mets collectors seem to be increasingly alert lately for whatever reason.

Sun Times show. . .it was a really great show for me - among the best I've ever had. Found almost 100 raw 1973s. . .and even though I spent almost no time looking through 72s, I found 8 raw cards that should be 8s. Right now, I'm down to 23 cards away - so finding 8 cards is a BIG deal. PLUS. . .I found a Mays IA that should be an 8. . .I found a McRae IA that's centered 50/50 that's somewhere between an 8 and a 9. . .and a Del Rice (#718) that has an excellent shot at a 9. Best of all, I finally got to meet King Kellogg! A great time was had by all.
