very brief Boston Coin show report

Pretty much the same as last year. Two large rooms filled with tables, good mix of US, non-US and ancient coins. Fairly busy, as you can see from the sneak pic below I took with my cell phone. My favorite table had the most terrific MS62 1799 $10 I've ever seen among other very rare US beauties, some gems that I didn't know existed, at fair prices... just not in my budget at the moment. Dealer knew his stuff. May go back tomorrow. Just so I didn't leave empty handed, bought a BU roll of mixed date Morgans.

I was there for about four hours. I thought theshow was really dead. I went looking for a generic MS66 Morgan and came away empty. A lot of cleaned and messed will stuff. A couple of arrogant dealers too. The only thing I did buy was a 39S MS65 quarter, but this coin was brought to the show by a dealer I knew especially for me. Bottom line, I was dissappointed.

I set up here on Friday, and it was plain awful.

Buying, selling, the whole package. I couldn't get much done. A wasted day for me, and I was there from 8 a.m-7p.m.

I don't have time to elaborate right now, but I usually skip this show, and after Friday, I remember why.

I used to go to this show every year, but after a while I could never find what I was looking for, and I noticed the neighborhood where the hotel is has gone downhill and I wouldn't want to carry off my coins without having an uzzi under my flak jacket.

  • Clearly I'm in the minority for liking it. How the heck do they keep this show going year after year if so many folks think it's such a dud?

While its not exactly the ANA, I didn't think it was that bad.

And perhaps I'm steelier than some, but I was able to have lunch at the Legal Seafood across the street from the hotel without even having to brandish my Uzzi one time.

There were a few decent coins in the room - including the requisite few hundred thousand Morgans in 63 - 66.

The traffic at the show was ok. Not great, but ok. For the size of this show, there should be more things going on, but there just isn't.

I believe this show has a loyal following of dealers with storefronts that make the trip 2x a year, out of habit, more than anything else. I think most of them feel comfortable trading with each other, and look at newcomers like they have two heads. My opinion. image

I've never had a problem with the neighborhood, and I've spent quite a bit of time down in this area, at the theatres, and over at Tufts, and into Chinatown. I wouldn't stay away because of that.

The show has really turned into a non-event for me. I'm not going to bother again with getting a table. I'll walk the floor if I come back.

With that said, the fall show IS the better show of the two that are held here.

Hey, I bought some "stuff", and sold some "stuff", but probably would have done better if I stayed home and worked the phone and emails for the day.

The monthly Westford Ma. show had more "pop" than this show!
