#2 T205 Gold Border PSA graded set breakup

Hi. I wanted to let the board members know about the breakup of the #2 all-time T205 set, the EWH Memorial T205 Collection. It will be in the April Mastro auction. My second son starts college in the fall and this is the way we are financing our sons' college educations. The only cards not offered are the Young and the Hobby, no stats. I've opened up the set for viewing on the PSA Registry and most cards have scans. The set represents 12 years of focusing primarily on T205s and includes many highlights.

There are 70 PSA 7 cards, including tough ones such as Ball, Crandall (t not crossed), Daubert, Delahanty, Dickson, Dygert, Foxen, Gibson, Goode, Herzog, Harry McIntire, Moriarity, Pelty, Stahl, Summers and Wolter.

PSA 7 HOFers include Baker, Breshnahan (both versions), Brown, Chance, Clarke, Duffy, Johnson, Marquard, Mathewson, McGraw and Tinker. All of the other HOFers, with the exception of Evers and Joss (PSA 5) and the two Wallace no caps (2 lines of stats is PSA 4-very high for that card), are PSA 6.

39 of the cards are the highest graded example of that card.

124 of the cards are one of the three highest graded examples of that card.

Very tough short print cards include Dahlen, Fisher, Karger, Kleinow, Scanlan, Sweeney, Vaughn, Wagner, and Wilhelm, all PSA 6. Rowan and Suggs are an incredible PSA 7.

Difficult variations include Barger (partial B), Chase (diamond extends), Chase (one ear), Collins (open mouth), Crandall (t crossed), Dougherty (white sock), Ford (white cap), Graham (Cubs), Gray (stats on back), Harmon (one ear), W.A. Latham and Shean (Cubs) are all PSA 6.

Moran, stray line PSA 5.

Minor leaguers Doc Adkins and Jimmy Collins are PSA 7. Cady, Phelan, Batch, Lee and Dunn are all PSA 6. The rest of the minor leaguers are PSA 5.

Cobb PSA 6.

Many more highlights and I hope you will seize this rare opportunity to obtain some of the very finest PSA graded T205s in the hobby. It may well be many years before some of the cards in these grades appear on the market. Good luck and enjoy. Feel free to email me with any questions at hench1@aol.com

Threads like this should get more attention.

Best of luck Hench. The collecting world will benefit from such amazing cards being available.

I had heard this sale was going on. All I can say is good luck!

I'm not even going to make a run as I know there will be no bargains for the buyers-- plus these cards are to nice for my meager PSA 4 set.

Hench- You are going to make a mint out of your Mastro sale. It sure is a wonderful set you have compiled.

    Wow,

I hate to get personal, don't answer this if you don't want to, but where is your son going to college? and what does he want to study?

    Wish him all the best!

  • Jerry, is this all going to be sold as one lot?

I desparately want to bid on these, but am curious as to how it's being sold. (It's probably online, I just like to wait to get my fat catalogue)
So it's too late to tell your son to borrow the money instead, so I don't have to go against you in future auctions?image

    Scott-
I had heard there will be 23(?) lots. Lots of the biggies will be single card lots I would guess and then maybe a few larger lots of commons.

  • Jeff, my son goes to the University of Texas-Austin and is in the Honors Business Program. His brother starts there in the fall.

Scott, I believe it will be broken into about 23 lots. I think there will be a couple of big lots (a 48 card lot of PSA 6s and a 30 or so lot of PSA 7s) and many much smaller lots. I think the Cobb is by itself and minor leaguers are grouped, but again, I'm not sure. I left it up to Doug Allen to break it up as he saw fit.

And I would have preferred to borrow instead of selling my set, but I'm self employed and am not in a position to tie up my credit if avoidable. Thus, the set will be shared and appreciated by many, and that is satisfying in its own way.

It would have been interesting to see how these cards would have fared on ebay rather than at auction. Best of luck to you.

Hench1- Univ. of Texas is very expensive and they have a top notch business program there.
I think breaking this set up in Mastro is a very good idea. Mastro has a way of bringing out top dollar. I will throw in a couple of bids to make it interesting.

  • 1954, you are correct. My wife and I had to put ourselves through college and I served in the Navy out of high school to help pay for it and still ended up in the hole after graduation. So my wife and decided long ago that one of the best gifts we could give our boys was a debt free college education (contingent upon them making good grades and staying out of trouble-so far the plan has worked image). Thanks for being willing to bid and good luck!

My wife and I have decided that the one of the best gifts we can give the children is the ability to say "junior college".
  • David, I went to junior college myself, so I don't have any problem with that, but part of our deal is the reward for good grades and behavior is four years at any university to which they can get admitted. Our older son was his class salutatorian and our younger one was in National Honor Society and both lettered in varsity baseball with no serious problems from either one along the way, so we're happy with the way things have worked out. Now, we just have to pay for it! image
