What kind of toning is this???

anablepanablep Posts: 5,096 ✭✭✭✭✭
1884-O Morgan:
I realize the pics are not the best, but this is my first attempt at posting my own pictures from a scan.

The colors around the rims of the coin are blue/purple, then as you move to the center it is more golden. Then the color stops and the centers are white.

Is this albumn target toning? AT or NT??

Thank you for any advice!image

The entire obverse and reverse are toned except the centers of the coin on each side.

ah,,, okay...ummmmm.....i could be wrong but it might be an AT job.

Being that its raw too doesnt help the case for NT either.

Good Luck on that one sir.

It looks very AT to me.
  • Yahoo still doesn't like the link. Sounds like album toning though. Older paper products were often made with all types of goodies that had wonderful (and sometimes not so wonderful) chemical reactions on metal.

If the toning had occured naturally over the years it wouldn't have a blast white center with blue & brown peripherals because whatever it was exposed to toned it would have made the center tone too.
To answer your question it's album or holder tone.

image Is there any way to "remove" this artificial toning without ruining the coin? What would acetone do?

AT. Use of iodine and heat. A Russian dealer out of LA used to do this type of work. Had cases of them at shows…..I think they were called KATZ coins.
