Are dies cracks on gold coins common?

I have a 1922 St. Gaudens double eagle in ms64, as I was looking at it with a loupe, I noticed that it has a load of die cracks on it.

Starting at the branch in Liberty's left hand, a crack goes across the top of the word LIBERTY and through the next two stars to the left of the L

Then, on the left side about a quarter inch from the stars, beginning at about 10:00 there is a crack that goes almost to the capitol building.

A third one goes from the right side of the capitol building, across the bottom of Liberty's skirt and into the oak leaves.

Another goes right across Miss Liberty's head.

Finally, there is one around about two thirds of the reverse.

I would have thought that Gold being a relatively soft metal would not easily crack the dies, not to mention both obverse and reverse dies.

I find them just as commonly on gold as on coins of other, harder metals.
