wife won't let me buy coins

How do I get around this? I can no longer afford to buy the coins I really like. I can't seem to achieve perfection in my collection. I believe getting the coins you want is part of the fun not wanting them. Sometimes I feel it is a futile battle. I suppose it is for most collectors. How do you guys get around this?

I generally buy whatever I want and don't tell her unless she asks.

I get around it by being single.

find a coin you can buy for let's say $1000 that you KNOW you could resell and make maybe $150-$250 on QUICKLY. do this and show her and I bet she won't give you a hard time again.

  • I tell my wife that rare coins are such a great investment that we are going to enjoy one heck of a retirement. So far she has bought this line of bu--. Sure hope she doesnt read this post.

I feel your pain. My wife said if I buy one more coin, she's going to leave me.

My wife let's me buy coins as long as I don't go too overboard. Gotta make her feel sorry for you. You work so hard and you deserve a nice coin occasionally.

Same here. She pretty much lets me buy what I want as long as it doesn't involve credit. For bigger stuff I keep myself a secret stash of money and get what I want when I have the money. Most likely she already knows my secret stash anyway.

If it's you're money and you guys can afford it she should let you, but debt, bill & kids come first. If you're working and she isn't then you should stand up and declare that you work hard and should get what you want once in awhile. My brother has that problem. He works, makes good money and his wife stays at home even though all kids are in school, but she makes an issue anytime he wants to get something. He brought up a good point the other day. He's a NASCAR fan and wants to buy some of the diecast collectible cars and his wife basically said "No don't get those we don't have the money for you to buy toys." He then replied "I make good money and work hard for it and I should be able to reward myself for it once in awhile and if you think we have money problems then maybe it's time for you to get a job!" I was proud of him!imageimageimage

  • Hedger, if you're doing your share in maintaining the household,
you deserve to have a hobby.
Granted, coin collecting can become very expensive.
Saving for the next big purchase may be easier if you
open a checking account in your name, make regular deposits
after paying the bills, and using that account when you find your
    next "must have" coin.
    good luck.
  • Collecting can be addictive, that means being out of touch with reality. If your collecting is "under control", start buying AND selling, and always give your wife a part of the profit! She'll dig the income and you'll be an addict again.
  • It's really simple. I've turned several things around here into coin-op machines,... the lawnmower, the weed eater, etc. etc. IF I don't get the coins I really want, those machines don't operate. image

You said you can't afford to buy the coins you really like. If you can't, you can't.

It's not right to spend more than you can afford to on a hobby, even if you might (might!) make a profit down the road. Coins are illiquid and there's no guarantee you can sell a coin in a hurry for its true value. First must come taking care of the bills, staying out of debt, and saving for the future.

Why not refocus your collecting interest on something that is more in line with your collecting budget? There are limitless areas of collecting to work on.

    Best of luck!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Sounds like time to trade her in

He had every right to say what he did. She hasn't worked a day in her life in their 14 year marriage. He's supported her the whole time so he's got a right to do what he wants. She sure didn't have any problem spending $100 to have her hair done.image

Please remember that marraige is a bond between man and woman. Each entrusts the other with his/her life , both body and soul. To desecrate this sacrament with a blatant gauntlet to the ground would not be looked kindly upon by the church or God. When that point comes when you feel the need to make a purchase of which your spouse disaprove, remember, do not belittle her with confrontational, testosterone-fed chest puffing. Lie.

Which one of you is being unreasonable?

Are you trying to spend money on coins that you need to pay your mortgage? Buy food? Repair your hypothetical leaky roof? If so, I think she has a point.

On the other hand, if you are talking about spending some of your disposable income that would otherwise be spent on CDs, Miller High Life and sheepskin seatcovers for your Camaro, well, then, I think you ought to sit down with the little lady and talk your way through this.

In my vast experience, however, its usually the coin collector who is addicted, spending out of control and behaving recklessly. If thats you, cut it out.

  • I included my husband in my madness. A few years ago I spotted a nice flowing hair $ in Fine that was selling for VG $ at a local dealers. I raved to my husband about the coin and what a good deal it was. He bought it for me for my birthday. I had it slabbed as Fine, which instantly increased the listed value by 25%. Every once in awhile I tell my husband what the current value is. It has almost quadrupled since I got it. He gets all happy and puffed up that he bought it for me.

I have to admit that I usually use the Red Book for the prices because they are slightly higher and I never mention the fact that a lot of my collection has just stayed in about the same $ range...

Seriously, my husband looks nervous when he sees me looking at the big ticket items, but tries to be supportive. I thought he was going to have a heart attack the other night. He saw me drooling over Stuart's beautiful bust dollar with the amazing toning. He started breathing again when he realized I was just talking to you guys and not shopping.

You might want to take a close look at your collection for pieces you don't need which could be cashed in to buy others.
    I collect circulated U.S. silver
  • I've found I need to buy fewer coins, but each purchase needs to become a more valued experience. Wait longer to get the right coin instead of settling. If it means waiting 6 months or whatever, then each purchase should become a more valued experience because of the expectation.

Give her what she wants first (a Louis Voo ton - and yes i know that is spelled wrong - purse, an additional male friend, a new Escalade.....) and she'll give you what you want.
