WOW! Reserves have kicked in for Heritage Sale – Jeffersons prices

The 1954s MS65FS now has a next bid of $8250 with buyers premium $9400+. Last time I checked this was a pop 7 coin with 1 better. Other Jeffersons now have similar high reserves relative to their pop numbers.

Will these Jeffersons sell at these prices?

Frank: I've personally seen most of the Jefferson Nickels in the Heritage sale and I can tell you first hand that, overall, the quality of the group is EXCEPTIONAL. Expect to see record prices on many of the coins, as they deserve record prices IMHO. I also believe a strong number of the coins have already exceeded the reserves and the auction is still a week away. So much for the concept of "high reserves". image

When great coins come around, lately they have been selling for strong money and, in the case of the finest known Jeffs, I expect the same to occur.

Speaking of the 54(s), I mentioned on the NGC boards earlier this week that the 54(s) Jeff in this sale is, I believe, the former ANACS-MS66FS coin (there appears to be some confusion on that point, so for now, let's just say it is possible it is the coin, but not definate). In either case, this 54(s) is a gem++ specimen with strong steps. The obverse die state is arguably what holds the coin back from an even higher grade IMHO. Anyone in the market for a gem 54(s) Jefferson - that coin is "all there and a bag of chips" IMHO. Yes, that particular coin is not cheap and has yet to meet reserve, but, IMHO, that specimen would be a centerpiece to any serious finest known Jefferson collection (and I have never bought or sold this particular coin prior to placing the coin in the Heritage sale on behalf of a collector who owns the coin).

By the way, if anyone should have a question about a particular Jeff in the sale, feel free to PM me and I will try to answer it.

  • The prices are already exceptional! I had hoped to aquire, maybe two coins, now one if I'm lucky.
Still looking hard at the pics and will go for the coin I like best and not the slab grade, although
I must consider the slab and the picture.
In less than two years, I have seen the value of the high grade Jeffersons go up. Well, some
toned pieces went for top $$$ , but many dates reallly have jumped in price when they did become available
    at auction.
I bought numerous coins privately and have no second thoughts to the price paid, especially as of late.
The only concern is whether I can complete my set as I intended (In the top ten).

I would think finding this year in FS would be really tough. The obverse looks weakly struck and almost mushy to me. The reverse looks to be struck really nice. It is a low pop coin but does the coin demand a premium for the overe all strike? I have one on ebay in the same grade right now. It is not full steps but the over all strike is IMO evenly struck.

Would anyone care to comment on mine? Is it at the top of it's value because it does not have FS or is it more appealing to more colletors due to over all strike or price? Mine is a pop of 98/19 compaired to the FS of 7/1. Of course we are not talking the same kind of money.

Any thoughts you care to share?

  • I like white coins, maybe a golden tone.
See how I feel in the morning.
Heritage prices are slowing down my buying for high end coins.
Still want to complete my set though.
Your question... The strike looks alright. What I like is the absence of heavy strikes and bag marks.
The color doesn't impress me, but doesn't bother me. Pictures never really show the true appeal.
Alright! I'll bid on it! Can't touch the price on a full step...

One of the coins I need/want is already past what I thought I was willing to spend. May have to rethink that one... and seriously.

The other one is still well below my pain threshhold. Keeping fingers crossed on that one.

    This is exciting!!
    When in doubt, don't.

    Hello Wondercoin!

"Given up on" isn't the right term. "May have to rethink... and seriously" would be the 1946-D/D.
    When in doubt, don't.

Dennis: OK - since you are still considering what to do with that coin, I will not comment here about it. Good luck with your decision.

I never thought the prices would be that high. I had plans on spending big (even warned my wife). Now I have been outbid on every coin! May have to shoot for a single one, and hope to see some leftovers go up for sale soon!

Anyone looking for a 1939-D FS coin might find a "deal" here compared to the heritage sale.

Mark: Perhaps you missed the additional coin that comes with the 39(d) in the Heritage auction lot? image

I did see the the additional coin. I think the e-bay auction for both 39-D varieties will match the price the of the 39-D in the heritage sale (on a per coin basis). This is of course for the collector who is not interested in a 63 66FS!

    Mitch:

I agree if the obverse matched the reverse it would be worth the asking price in my opinion.

"I agree if the obverse matched the reverse it would be worth the asking price in my opinion"

Frank: Of course, the only problem then would be you would be looking at an MS66FS++ coin and a near $15,000 - $20,000 price tag IMHO image

It's not the ANACS MS66FS coin which -- unless a terrible mistake has been made -- is sitting comfortably in my safety deposit box. It's a beautiful coin and not for sale.

    Enjoy ...

    JHF,

Any chance of seeing a photo of the 54-S? It must be a beautiful strike!
