Coin Show Reports?

GeomanGeoman Posts: 2,491 ✭✭✭
What makes a good coin show report? What information should be included? What information would you personally like to see?

I have seen many people post reports, and can get an idea. But my opinions are somewhat different than others attending the same show. For example, I have been to a show, and thought it was great! But I am a newer collector, that needs about everything yet. However, some seasoned collector's were at the show, and posted a report stating there wasn't anything new, or good, or worth mentioning. So, it really depends on a person's prespective.

What is most important for you to see?

All reports will be someone's individual point of view. The bigger shows have more board members attending so we get to hear different perspectives, but for small shows we might only hear from one person. That's fine by me - one person's point of view is better than nothing.

The only reports that don't interest me are the ones that say "I got there, didn't see anything I wanted, and went home."

    I like to hear about:
    - Was it busy?
    - Any really great coins seen?
    - Were there any educational seminars held along with the show?
    - What were dealers and collectors buzzing about?
    - What kind of material was being offered? Was there a book dealer?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I like the show to be put in some context, so I say how big it is and how often it happens.

I'm also interested in how busy the show is (floor traffic, money changing hands, etc.)

Did you hear any gossip (dealer-to-dealer is best)? Who did you see? (other members, well-known dealers, etc.)

What coins did you see? What coins didn't you see? How were prices?

How were the dealer's attitudes (were they happy with the show? Were they busy buying?, etc.)?

If by some slim chance there are any "Grumpy" dealers, I always like to hear about it.

With shows I'm not familiar with it's nice to have some info on size, traffic, and other nuts and bolts.
Otherwise I'm mainly interested in the reporters perspective and a general feel for the buzz of the
place. Also if there are a lot of kids and other non-typical collectors in attendence.

These reports are most valuable, perhaps, for information in the reporter's fields but any other information
    is also of interest.

    hey Geoman

i always try to give my impressions of what was actively happening. in the kranky styleimage-----

what i overheard collectors looking for and cannot find.
what series' seem to be hot.
    any unusual happenings.
the general demeanor of the floor and the dealers, is it busy/noisey and are they upbeat?
    what i bought.
who i met, forum members in attendance.
was there a preponderance of certain coins or slabs in the cases.
what happened socially before or after show hours and who with, stuff like dinner or poker.

i just figure my interpretation of what the show was like with an objective viewpoint is the best i can do. certainly, everyone in attendance will see/hear different things, so i take the different reports with a grain of salt, even my own. geez, during 7-8 hour day at a show a lot can happen and if a collector is searching for something, it can be daunting to pay attention to all the action.

one neat thing i saw at my last show and forgot to mention was a young girl, maybe 8-10 who was with her dad. she had a Rubic's Cube and could solve it in a manner of minutes!! just an entertaining distraction, but fun to watch her twist them sides and match the colors up while her dad talked coins!!
