the end of the Kellogg's is near

I was restacking some of my graded cards last night (laying flat on a shelf, out of direct light or any sunlight, in a low-humidity part of Southern California and kept normally at 70 to 72 degrees), and noticed that my '72 All-Time Greats Tris Speaker PSA 8 now has 2 large cracks through its upper portion that weren't there a couple months ago when I last looked at it. I looked through the rest of my Kellogg's cards, and most looked just fine, although a '75 Bill North PSA 8 looked at from a certain angle looks like it may be getting several large arcing cracks across its upper portion.

So, am I sitting on a bunch of ticking time bombs? Am I storing them improperly?

Will PSA do anything about the card that definitely no longer matches its grade?

The issue of K-Kard cracking has been covered in depth before, but I don't recall much of the discussion focusing on the above question. Beyond the world of Kelloggs (yes, one exists King image), there are other scenarios where this question could matter. What about gradual fading due to exposure to light? What about moisture damage due to humidity? And of course what about cards cracking ...

In my view, there isn't anything PSA could or should do in cases like these where at some point in time the card "becomes" inferior for the grade on the label. It's not their fault Kelloggs were made with certain materials, any more than it's their fault some (thought I suspect few) collectors don't store their cards properly. That said, I could see a legal stink raised at some point down the road, using their mysterious "guarantee" ... though a minor issue now, it could become a bigger issue years down the road.

    Scary.

Someone kept it in NM-MT condition for 32 years, and only recently does the card crack.
  • That is a shame, I really like those cards, they are fun to look at and just plain old neat cards. I remember when I was little, scattering them all over the house and then watching my mom throw them all away.
