The Mint claimed these were not doubled dies, but it's pretty well agreed amongst the major attributors that they are. I saw someone list one on eBay as "DDR-007", so if there are at least seven dies extant I don't think we're necessarily talking about a rare variety. Coppercoins will have a much better answer, I'm sure.

Incomplete planchets wanted, especially Lincoln Cents & type coins.

"Keep in mind that most of what passes as numismatic information is no more than tested opinion at best, and marketing blather at worst. However, I try to choose my words carefully, since I know that you guys are always watching." - Joe O'Connor
  • No Denver specimins have been reported.

I recently sent one to James Wiles of CONECA and he had the following to say about it: "Appears to be an EDS of this listing. It has the diagnostic die gouge in the field east of Lincoln's eye, but absent the die gouges under the date and the die crack on upper column 3. I am witholding judgment until more information is gathered. I never did list the 94 wavy steps as I had some reservations and still do. If I decide to list these I will let everyone know." I sold the coin on eBay for $35ish.

The U.S. Mint has also examined the coin and announced a month ago that it was due to the grain of the planchet. In a recent CW article they are backing away from that theory and calling it die deterioration doubling.

Billy Crawford lists two Philly dies, CDDR-1 and CDDR-2 for this coin. Check here for photos: Link

The coin has been examined by John A. Wexler and he has concluded it is also a DDR and has listed in his Wexler files as 2003 1c WDDR-001. John stated to that, "This appears to be a shifted and tilted hub doubling that snapped back into correct horizontal position during the hubbing process."

Additionally, Ken Potter as well has concluded it is a DDR and has listed in his files as 2003 1c VCR#1/DDR#1. Ken stated that, "This one has everything that the 1994 has! I'm referring to it as a limited pressure tilted hub doubled die and listing it as VCR#1/DDR#1." See Ken's article here: Link

As far as my opinion on the coin... well, I collect nickels. image

    Hope this helps...
