1893 Queen Victoria Hong Kong 5 Cent (LG Photos)

Trying to improve my photography skill when taking photos of coins. Thought I share this coin with the forum. Still haven’t gotten the photo skills down but what the heck. Nothing else to do today but practice.

    The pictures are excellent.

The coin is readily found in all grades up to AU. Up until recently these could
be found in poundage and at melt value. Uncs are a little elusive as are gems.
    Tempus fugit.
  • Excellent pics.

Would you mind sharing your technique: positioning of camera and coin, lighting and type of camera (I assume digitial) but what resolution etc.

    Thanks

  • Here’s some more I took. I read on the forum how some like Digital so you can see all the scratches compared to scan. Well I have this coin it’s dirty and scratched. But I’m still fond of it. So I thought I would try some of these techniques. All the photos are taken with digital no enhancement with photoshop. I didn’t even change the tone to look silver like the coin. But as you can see. One of the coin photos looks a lot better just turned to the right a little.

I'm no great photographer so drjules all I can honestly tell you is that I'm using a Digital Sony Mavica MVC- FD95 that takes floppy disk. It is 2.1 mega pixels and the lens is 20X precision digital zoom SteadyShot. I've had the camera I think 3 or 4 years. But I never had to really be the photographer since hubby took the photos of me. I just mess around with the AE setting till I see what looks pretty good to me and the White Balance. I take the orginal image size 1024X768 which gives me a sharper image since it is such a large file and I can only get 9 photos on a floppy. If I set it for smaller size I can get more images on the floppy, but not the quility I would like. Your going to laugh but I'm using my bathroom as my little coin studio. So it's just bathroom lights. But I do use a regular desk lamp with a 40 watt light bulb in it. Thats the light I really use to spot light the coin. Because my flash is straight on and it just washes out the detail of the coin. I just move the camera around to capture the light. No expensive equipment here. Just what I have around the house.

Thank you Shipcoin and cladking for the info since I have no book to tell me anything about the Hong Kong coin.
