  • Hi snapmohr. If you have a Heritage account, you can search their auction archives for examples of each. Some pictures are better than others. Dennis

  • Do you have to have an account to search their archives, because I don't?
  • Yes, you need to register, but it's free. I think that Heritage has an awesome web site......in terms of content. Great for research. There are tens of thousands of coins and currency on the site. It's fantastic and it's one reason that I patronize their business.

Regarding the 1939 coppers, do you have any reference material? John Wright's "The Cent Book" is one of the best numismatic references ever written, imho.

head of 36 N-1 only variety with this head.(Sorry it isn't a very nice coin) key identifying feature, the cords tying up the hair are plain. All orther varieties have beaded cords. Also this is the 39/6 over date which does show on this pic.
    image

Head of 38 two varieties N-2, N-3 Identifying feature beaded cords, no protruding lock of hair at forehead.

Booby head 8 varieties N-5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15. Identifying feature protruding lock at forehead, sharp point of shoulder sticks out past bottom wave of hair.
    image

Silly head two varieties N-4, 9 Same as the booby head but the shoulder point does NOT extend past the hair.
    image

Petite head one variety N-8 Head is tipped forward with point of bust over the 8 instead of the 1 like all of the others. Also note the position of the point of the coronet with relation to the closest star. On the Petite head it is by star 5, on all the others it is by star 6. Same head style used 1840 - most of the 1843's (Sorry another poor picturewith coin rotated a little but you should be able to see the point of the bust is over the 8, especially if you compare it to the other pictures.)

    (There is no N-10)
