GOETZ: S.M.S. Möwe Homecoming K-175

Opus 175 “AUXILIARY CRUISER “MÖWE” HOMECOMING (S.M.S. Möwe Heimkehr), 1916, Cast AE, 56.8mm, Edge Incuse KGoetz.

Commemorating one of the most spectacular feats of the war by reaching a German North Sea port in safety. The Möwe had cruised for days in the open Atlantic, in the paths of the British and French vessels, six of which it captured. The biggest catch was found on the British passenger liner Appam, 1 million Marks in gold bars. Obverse: Sea Mew eludes British lion with inscription, “H.M.S. Möwe’ Homecoming.” Reverse: Whimsical fish frame inscription, “March 4, 1916. The world seas ruling Albion subscribing 1 million in gold to the fourth war bond issue.” It gave Goetz pleasure to add insult to injury.

Yeah, I won seven and I think I have shown you guys four or five of them so far. I've got my work cut out for me though because I have 31 more arriving in the mail any day now. image
  • I know this is a stupid question. But I’m going to ask anyway since I’m new around here. cacheman I’ve visited your site. Am I correct that it is all art. That these are not real medals or coins in existence? They’re so beautiful. You always post some of the most off the chain stuff (Means very good). Please explain to me what I’m looking at when you post. Is it art work of designs from pure imagination.

Another wonderful addition to the collection! image

When did the satirical era end? Or did he retain some of it all the way through his career?

The satirical period has been defined by Kienast as 1913-1923 and encompassed Opus numbers 131 to 306. Karl still maintained tongue in cheek commentary on some pieces after that time frame though.

Nice Scott, that's one strange beast.

LovelyDarkAngel, these are real three-dimentional medals, produced in small quantities. If you want more info, I suggest you do a search on Karl Goetz.

I never get tired of looking at these pieces-I wonder if we realize how lucky we are to have forum members like Scott and Cosmic who are able to show us these medals and coins from Goetz. Where else can something which some might construe as arcane get this kind of exposure, along with accurate history of the period and the medals themselves, and in doing so, re-confirm them an important part of the hobby-probably nowhere else...

    All right Scott!image
