  • Nice coins Morris!

The 1946D is MS67, IMO, and the 1949 an MS66.

We are finite beings, limited in all our powers, and, hence, our conclusions are not only relative, but they should ever be held subject to correction. Positive assurance is unattainable. The dogmatist is the only one who claims to possess absolute certainty.

  • Wow what a beauty. image

  • I don't know if the '47 D would go 67, the rev looks a little weak, hit in left wing and ticks over eye on obv. But I still wish that I had a raw one that niceimage

I think you mean 46, edsondl. Actually, that coin is very weakly-struck all around. Little hair detail, flattened "LIBERTY" and date, and the eagle's feathers have very little striation compared to the 49, which is reasonably well-struck.

In fact, these photos are an excellent learning example of the difference between a weak strike and a strong one.

    We ARE watching you.

I don't really know how to grade Washingtons, but they are both nice looking coins to me Morris.

I think AU58 on the 46D, (I may be crazy), looks like a little too much wear around the rim above Liberty, the 49 I think will go MS65. JMO

    Looking for PCGS AU58 Washington's, 32-63.

MS 64 & MS 66 respectively at first glance! JMHOimage
  • To me, there is no comparison between these two (though some of htis may be the photography). Assuming the photos are equal (same light, etc), the 46 (especially the reverse) looks really pretty ordinary----well kept over the years, but it started life as a very ordinary coin. Compare the text on the reverse of the two coins. "E Pluribus Unum" on the 46 shows little contrast compared to that on the other coin. Could be photography, but the mint mark on the 46 is very sharp; just the rest of the text isn't. Same with the feathers. Given that reverse, I'd question how much above MS60 the 46 would go.

    I'm in agreement, Pete.

Bikingnut, I would have to see the 46 in person to determine if there were any breaks in the luster in order to make a determination as to whether it was a coin in MS with a weak strike, or an AU slider. Pics can be very deceiving. I once had a Walker that everyone on this board told me was AU, only to have it slabbed by PCGS at MS66.

Edited for spelling: "i" before "e" except after Seagrams.
