Not my auction, but I thought you would like to see and comment on the coin, Ebay Australia 1916 SLQ

Just thought you might like a look. It's opening at about $3k US, and the seller accepts escrow.

I agree ! Its a very nice example. However the coin's in Prague, I'm a bit leery about out of country auctions.

Private auction. Not in the US. Expensive item. Need I say more?

    Ebay Scam 101:

    Set up account...Check

Do a few small purchases to get good feedback.....Check.

List expensive item to rip off American Communist Bass Turds!

    Change Ebay ID and repeat.

I wouldn't touch it. But the pictures are pretty image Nice coin, but this is as close as I would get to it. image

I think mrpaseo has hit the nail on the head with this one. Do you all think this person really has this rare and desirable coin in his/her possession? Me think not. RED FLAG! image

Nice coin, but this is as close as I would get to it.

Frankly, it's not in my comfort zone either, but I sure like the coin.image

I assume that this coin is not in a Registry Set, if it were, the legitimacy of the owner could be determined.
I'd love to buy the coin, its very nice, maybe if I snipe it, I could fly to Prague , go on vacation , fly home and still come away with a profit. This coin is now being touted in the $15,000 range ( esp. w/ FH).

I just located the IDENTICAL coin with the IDENTICAL ID# in Heritage's auction archives. It sold Sept. 20, 2003 for $9775. I suppose the Ebay seller might have acquired it directly through Heritage or from someone else after the sale. But, I bet not!

  • I would hope that someone here that are more familiar than I with this coin and its provenance would alert the ignorant bidders to the possibility that they are about to be ripped off for several thousands of dollars.image

Seems to be the exact same picture with the Heritage copyright cropped off. Though distracting, I compliment Legend (are you allowed to do that here?image) for putting their company name on the coin in a place such that this scam would be harder to pull off.

its provenance would alert the ignorant bidders to the possibility that they are about to be ripped off for several thousands of dollars

The privacy of the ignorant bidders is being "protected" by the seller--private auction! (which to me, is always a huge red flag)

I know a highly "ignorant bidder" who has placed a very strong bid on the coin to ensure that no one (who might be even more ignorant) gets stuck with it.image

Don Heath Sent me a PM on this auction earlier tonight. I was thinking the same as him, there is no way Id buy this from a 10 rating guy especially oversee's. After, I saw it, I got to thinking, I know I have seen this coin before, wasnt until I just read this post and Mark Felds post, that I remembered now, its from a Heritage sale.

Good job mark, hopefully your anonymus bid will keep someone from losing a ton of dough.

If you use escrow how could he scam you? He would not get the money until you were happy, right?

I sent the sell an E-Mail stating I was VERY interested in the coin. Told him I wanted to know if he had the coin in hand and to send a scan of the coin wrapped in todays newspaper with a tail of the paper going up the back of the coin. Well it's been a day and a half and no answer!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
Not necessarily. Part II of the scam is using a bogus escrow compnay he set up, or is in cahoots with.
  • MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭
Good thinking Marty, at least you'll know if he has the coin in his possession or not.

Doesn't mean you'll actually see the coin if you pay for it.

This person has never SOLD anything on ebay before. His feedback has been from Sellers. He's bought a bunch of Videos and a couple of cheap watches.

Wouldn't go near that auction. Although I am tracking it thru MyEBay...........image
