81 topps / donruss / fleer

i don't know why i'm on an 81 kick all of a sudden. purchased and received another topps vending box (will not do this again) and an 81 donruss wax. i just enjoy opening the packs with my kids and there usually not that expensive. plus i like the stars of this era. the 81 topps had a schmidt, rose RB, baines, valenzuela and they were somewhat skewed. other than that no major stars. i was disappointed in what i received but i enjoyed looking thru them.

the 81 donruss was pretty fun to open. had several stars in this (lots better than the 81 fleer from two weeks ago). i can remember when these first came out and i was buying them like crazy for .30 pack. i would sell coke bottles to get enough money to buy them.

if you are interested in 81 topps donruss or fleer to complete a set, let me know. several of the donruss are skewed and looks like the cutting edge wasn't too sharp. i'll be happy to send a scan.

i think i'll send a few to PSA as well. is there a such thing as a PSA 10 81 donruss (any card)..haha.

i should have an 80 topps wax coming first of next week.

Thanks,

David (LD_Ferg)

  • 81 Donruss are tough.
Thin paper stock with bad centering. I've been trying to find a nice Ozzie card. I own a PSA 8. But i never see any PSA 9's. Last one i saw went for $60+ i beleive.
PM me if you got one available!
Good luck if you submit some of them. You might make a decent profit if you get some good grades.

  • Hey guys. While I have been working on 1977 Topps (Apostle Collection) for the past few years in graded form, 1981 Donruss is my "pet set". It is the most freakishly nice thing I've ever owned. It's been a work in progress for a few years now. The bulk of it came from one outrageous purchase that I have yet to figure out completely--I posted about it when it happened a year or so ago. Anyway, 2/3 of the set is actually within 4-6% or better from a centering standpoint with stock quality and images that are actually odd to look at. I have broken somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 wax boxes and they have yielded prescious notta! I remember Frank Smith and Mike Castaldi and I breaking a box for fun at a dinner at my place last year and the final score was: Smith 2, Castaldi 1, Frazier 0 on MINT cards. After we broke that box they agreed that my 81 donruss set is bizarre. Yeah, I'm bragging, but the thing is a monster! Maybe someday I'll grade the whole thing. Then I can have 4 grand into a $10 set...doesn't really pencil now, does it? 81 Donruss rocks! Topps is tougher than most people think, Fleer is easier (I can't submit one without getting a 9 or 10 it seems), but 81 Donruss presents an inexpensive, colorful walk down memory lane with unique challenges. If you're from Chicago, you'll LOVE the Wrigley and Comiskey photo's...
