Would you pay this price for this card?

I'm trying to put together this set in PSA 9 fasion, but I couldn't believe how much this card went for. It's not even his rookie card. You think it was worth the 127.50?
I collect Topps Chrome Basketball Rookie Refractors, particularly from 96-97, and limited edition rookies of Taiwanese baseball players.

Maybe the buyer is the guy sitting in the crowd in the front row and he had to have it?

MalePro- I would not have invested at that price. I see the auction is done.

I looked at the SMR population report on this card and not many have been submitted for grading. 1-8, 5-9's and 2-10's.

SMR doesn't list a value on this card, unless I missed it.

If I were you, I would hunt for this card at your local card shop or at a card show - raw.

    My opinion. Good luck.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!
  • Alright....the 1996 Chrome set is VERY POPULAR. A high percentage of these are off centered or have refractor lines. The person who bought this also is probably putting a set together and didn't mind paying a premieum on it. Just ask some set builders on the boards, if you want the best you will pay whatever. My suggestion is just buy some raw examples and submit them yourself. In a group of submissions (all refractors) your bound to get some good grades.

Yeah, I think it's probably worth it to a serious KG, modern basketball collector, or set builder. Remember how short Topps Chrome was, and refractors were 5-6 per box or so. So there can't be too many examples of them floating around out there. Even though it's not a rookie, it's a 2nd year card, and a pretty tough one to find in Mint. As 90s sets become targets of registry members, I think prices like this for the top guys might be expected.
