Morgan grades in! Boy do I need a book on grading!

bearcavebearcave Posts: 3,996 ✭✭✭✭✭
I guess they could have been worse. These are 4 of my freebies and I wanted to see how they would do.

1 21514932 1890-S S$1 USA AU55 Thought this one would go MS60
2 21514933 1887 S$1 USA MS64 Thought this one would go MS65
3 21514934 1886 S$1 USA MS62 This one was right
4 21514935 1880/79-O S$1 USA XF45 Thought this one would AU at least?

Goes to show you just never know. For some reason I always like my stuff better than it is!

One thing about these grades, it will give me something to compare to when buying raw.

I didn't get any body bags at least, thats 1 good thing!

Kriek, hope yours comes out what you are expecting.

  • One thing I have learned the hard way...if you think it's an MS 60 because of weak strike, it's probably AU
  • What exactly, are Body Bags in terms of coin grading?

    Thanks, I hope so too.

A coin that is "cleaned" or damaged in some way that PCGS will not grade the coin.

And Paigowjohnny, Iwould say you are right. I thought weak strike.

So, PCGS will not grade a coin that has been cleaned, even if it was cleaned many years ago???

So they say. Anything harshly cleaned will not be graded--really old coins that have very light cleanings might get through.

    Thanks for the info airplanenut

I assume "dipping" is considered "cleaning". Sorry for the questions, but I just recently started collecting (again) and just happened upon this forum (though I had been using the on-line PCGS Daily Price Guide for some time now). I have never believed in cleaning coins but it seems a lot of people out there do it to try to fool collectors they are getting something they aren't.
  • I don't get my hopes up high with them anymore, PCGS is tuff and not perfect. I had submitted a 1oz gold eagle one time and it come MS67. I wasn't happy with the grade. I broke it out of the holder and resubmitted the coin to PCGS. This time it came back MS69.....

Bet if you crack them and resubmitted, you would receive different grades. Remember, grading is an opinion, not a science.
