Pujols is on FIRE!

Is it just me, or is Albert Pujols rookie cards on fire? I just can't seem to get one. I have been bidding on PSA 9's and 10's and getting outbid every time. I am bidding considerably above SMR too. I knew I should have bought a bunch of them within the last two years. Anybody got any they want to sell cheap? (Yeah, right!)

  • frank- it's not you. pujols rookie cards are red hot. with the exception of topps heritage i don't collect anything post '78. my son collects modern superstars in 9 and 10, i've tried to win him many a bowman chrome and spx pujols rookies, to no avail. i've speculated that the cards will come down and will be able to get one for less than 350-400, now i'm starting to wonder if i'm going to pay 500 bucks for one. if he starts the season of hot and seems well on his way to another triple crown type season i think they may go even higher! the ceiling on his talent is as high as the ceiling on his cards. GOOD LUCK.

Have you been watching his cards for the last year? They have been on fire for at least that long...it is not a recent development. I actually noticed a small decrease in some of his lesser rookies over the winter, but surely that will change as the season starts.

  • Yes they're on FIRE! His Bowman Chrome Auto (wanted to get one) was just selling for $500-600 before season was over and now is about $800 raw.

I got 2 SPx redemtions for less than $100 each and redeemed them. I sent for grading (before I got pissed at PSA for damaging my ichiro cards) and got PSA 9s. Sold each for $150 and got myself a PSA 10 for $210 for selling the 2 PSA 9s (I should have bought more! The seller was offering me another for same price but don't have $$ to spend). At that time that price was pretty high already. I recently sold it for $700+

The Cardinals are auctioning off their stockpile of Pujols rookies (and shill bidding) to help pay for his new contract!

I tried for about 4 months to get an autographed rookie card of his in a PSA 8 - BGS 8 range. First probelm I ran into was that most cards on eBay were graded PSA 9 - PSA 10 , or BGS 9 - BGS 9.5. I didn't want to pay that much since I think it is not economically feasible to pay that much for modern cards. After the season ended, I noticed that his cards started cooling off (as most baseball cards do in the offseason). I ended up finding a BGS 8.5 2001 Topps Finest Auto for about $130.00. Not bad at all for what I think is his most beautiful card.

Now, it may be too late to get your hands on his cards cheap. If he has a great season again, you will either (1) have to pay a lot, (2) wait until the end of the season, or (3) buy some boxes from that year and send the cards in for grading.

    Good luck.

It's not just his RCs. 2002-2004 Pujols singles go for about full book on ebay a lot of times, plus shipping. With his remarkable new contract, no swirling steroidal complications, All-World talent, being on a team of national prominence, and being a good guy, he's poised to be the Ken Griffey Jr. of the 00s.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay

    God!
    Let's hope not!
    cause Griffey SUCKS now....

Hopefully you MEANT that he is poised to do all the
things that Jr. was SUPPOSED To do or
that he is poised to be as Great as Jr. was SUPPOSED To be!

I think he meant that he thinks Pujols will be in the 2000's what Griffey was in the 1990's.

I agree w/ helionaut. I think he is the best pure hitter in the game, along with him being a pretty nice guy. I just hope the money doesn't change him as a player or as a person. I don't think it will.

I agree on all counts with all of you... Pujols is the real deal!

The only thing that bothers me is the rumour that he is up to 4 years older than his stated age. That would make him 27 or 28 now, then his numbers would not only be less spectacular, but he'd have less if a chance to impact the all-time record books.

If someone is looking for a Pujols RC, I have a raw 2001 Topps Traded Gold taking up space in my box. It was a lucky pull that I got. Lists for $100 I believe. PM me if you are interested!

I sure hope your wrong. From what I have heard, he and his parents moved to Missouri when he was 16 and went to high school. That would have made him 20. You would think that people would have known.

Naturally I meant all the good things about Junior, not the shell he's become with the Reds. But you know, what goes up must come down, never say never, and what sounds too good to be true, etc. Of course, being in the Cardinals organization I think will be a benefit. I don't remember any Albert Belle-types coming up through there. Well, Vince Coleman turned out to be a jerk, but he was on the Mets when that was really made obvious, IIRC. But St. Louis, in the shadows of Ozzie, Musial, Gibson, etc., not to mention being under LaRussa's tutelage, seems to be a healthy environment for ballplayers. Even McGwire got to be a teddy bear for a few years.

Gah, I just looked at Pujols RCs. The basic Topps Traded goes for $20-$30! I opened at least a couple of those boxes back when and have a couple of those, but never pulled a Chrome. And I know I had a Pros & Prospects jersey #/500 somewhere, but I can't find it. That's annoying. That's gotta be a three-digit card at the moment. I hope I didn't sell it already.

  • After 9/11 many baseball players from Latin countries are found to be older than they stated. Recently, Alfonso Soriano admitted (informed the Yankees) he was 2 yrs. older. He was not caught because he carries a different visa.

As for Pujols. I had a feeling he's much older than stated. Pujols came here way before 9/11. There's a possibility that his age is altered. If age is a factor on his BB records then it will have a neg. impact on him.

maybe pujols lied about being 16 so he could play

So.....we fast forward nearly 19 years later!

This thread was started by me back when I first started here. I think my first post was in late 2003. Needless to say, I finally got my Pujols rookie cards. Oh, to go back and get them at 2004 prices. I still, however, do not own a 2001 Bowman Chrome Auto. Maybe one day!

    Nearly 19 years later -

    703 HR - 4th all time
    2,218 RBIs - 2nd all time
    3,384 hits - 9th all time
Extra base hits 1,405 - 3rd all time
    Total bases 6,211 - 2nd all time
Go ahead HR 263 - 1st all time
Pitchers HR against 458 - 1st all time
    3x MVP
    2x World Series Champion

The 3,000 hit club has 33 members
Seven are also in the 500 HR club
Three of those seven had 2,000 RBI's
One of those three has won 2 Championships.

His name is - Albert Pujols

My son and I saw HR 698!

(Yes, he is my favorite player and has been since early on)

Sorry to bring up a 19 year old thread, but I thought it was interesting!

Oh my! I thought of him. He was a big Pujols fan, but he was quite militant and loved arguing. I decided long ago that I wasn't going to get drawn into online brawls.

With a little more reflection and time, folks will more fully appreciate what Albert was able to accomplish. List is too darn long and already mentioned, but I will just say '700' home run club. In the history of MLB, this exclusive club has only 4 members. He is up there among the GOATS.

Paid $80 for this 2001 Topps Traded several years ago. Glad I did!

Might as well post the rest! I have 2020 and 2021 in PSA 10. I just haven't posted. I have 2022 Topps Update on the way in PSA 10.

Really, really hard to see any 1B other than Gehrig as better. You can argue about placement between them, but they have to be 1-2. Pujols is underrated because he had so many "old man" years, but when we get a little distance to forget how little the Angels got out of his contract and how good his entire body of work was, he'll get his due.

  • I am fortunate to be able to say we played against Albert in 1997 in the Missouri state championship. I played for Francis Howell, he was on Fort Osage. He did not disappoint either, he homered for the go ahead run and they ended up winning 4-3. We ended up going back in 1999, my senior year, and ended up 4th. Had a lot of fun playing ball in high school!
