Chinese gold pandas

The chinese gold pandas really caught my eye.
I'm thinking of starting a collection of 1oz from 1982 to present.
Does it make any sense to get slabbed ones?

Alot of people seem to prefer to collect these in the mint packaging. I have not seen many pandas slabbed, but if you do buy slabbed you can be more confident of it not being a counterfeit. It's just a matter of your own personal taste.

The Panda do make a cute collection, the 1982 being the toughest to find in it's original plastic particularly. It is a set usually collected in the 10th ounce size and entire sets can be purchased on ebay occationally. I have a couple of the 86 Proof sets and some small 1982's. Most of my other Pandas have been sold. I ebayer Brooks10101(FBI is on his case) sold some and did not produce them so beware of shame sales on the RARE stuff.
  • The gold and silver pandas are beautiful but the gold versions tend to be fairly expensive, especially the rare dates. These are hard to find but a couple dealers who offer the gold pandas include Kelleys Coins and PandaAmerica.

I collect 1 troy ounce gold bullion pandas in their original packaging (1982 - present). I even expanded to the short run 1 troy ounce platinum proof pandas (1987-1990). And the 1 troy ounce gold and platinum show commemorative pandas (12 coins from 1987-1990). image I got mine over the years from coin shows, eBay and coin dealers.

pandaamerica.com are selling them slabbed, but they tend to mark them up quite a bit. What do you guys think? Collect them in slabs or in original mint packaging? The reason why I'd want them in slabs is because these coins looks so cool that I would want to take them out often to look at them. So if they were slabbed, I will feel better. But I'd rather not pay gold+$200 for each coin. Maybe I'll just buy them raw and send them to pcgs/ngc myself.

    [edit] it's pandaamerica.com not pandamerica.com image

  • They are hard to find slab, I would buy them raw and submit them. Panda America also sells high quality coins, I buy their gold coins from Mexico and out of 17 coins only 1 graded MS67 the rest were MS69 by PCGS.......

I had bought several things (not a huge amount, but enough) from them over the last couple years. No problems until this year when I got a silver coin that looked to be damaged through the mint plastic...I emailed them about it and no response. Sigh, oh well, I hope I can find someone else to get next years zodiac fan from. It's too bad, they had just gotten to the point where I was ready to really not worry about them and I was going to try to keep using them for things I would normally ebay for. (Hey, I think I just used ebay as a verb!).

I've decided to buy them in their original packaging, not slabbed.
I'll try to collect the set without paying too much over gold price.
Other than ebay, any good place to get them online?
Both Kelly's and PandaAmerica are too expensive. And Sunfeico is out of stock.

Good luck! Start with all the different designs (2001 and 2002 had the same design). Note that in 1987 there were Y - mint mark (Shenyang), S - mint mark (Shanghai) and P - mint mark for proof. Also in 2001, there was the normal no mint mark and the D - mint mark (supposed to be for domestic issue in China). There are also P mint marks for some years other than 1987 continuing in 1988 to 1993 (?). There are also years where the issues had big or small years (don't know which ones). For 1995 and 1996 there were proof issues (no P mint mark) that had different designs than the bullion issues. Also for 1996 there was an anniversary issue that had additional legend in Chinese on the reverse with the regular bullion design. Also in 1991 there was a piedfort anniversary issue. On all the above, I am just referring to the 1 troy ounce size. image
