Cracking Open Proof Sets

What's the best way to "crack" open a proof set without damaging the coins?

The easiest for me is to slap an awl or pointed screwdriver between the half
and the coin on the right. Be sure to aim it so it doesn't hit the lower coins.
Most sets will pop right open but some from the late '70's can be tough. Wear
eye protection as shards of plastic can fly at VERY high speeds. You'll then might
need plastic gloves or other tools to get some coins out of the inner liner. This
is especially true for the older nickels. The mint actually used a "board" and a
hammer to get some of these coins in the sets. If you're just talking a single set
or two then save the stuck ones for last and they can be removed by distorting
the plastic. Newer sets are easier.

For very large numbers, some people use a 2 by 4 with a groove at the end and
    twist the case.

  • I have opened a couple of the new ones (1999 and later) and only needed a fine flat blade screwdriver. There is a place on the edge where bottom and top plastic meet. Just pry a little, and work your way around. After a scan, I closed them up just fine.

  • Somebody once told me...if you keep them in the box, and then give it a few hard twists ...a lot of times they'll pop pretty easily.
  • Thanks King. That worked slick.
