Just out of curiosity pattern people what is the difference in terms of mintage between an r-6 and a

Looking thru the dealer online websites the other day I noticed a neat looking pattern quarter from 1869 that was listed as an r-7.

I looked the Judd number up in the Pollock book and it listed the piece as an r-6 [Judd 723]

What is the difference in terms of mintage & possible value ?

    R-6: 13-30
    R-7: 4-12

    Value difference: No idea.

    The r-rating has nothing to do with mintage it is the estimated amount to still exist.

    Rarity scale.
    R1 most common; R8 least common.
    The often used Sheldon scale is:
    R8 = 1-3 known (estimated), "Unique or Nearly Unique"
    R7 = 4-12 known, "Extremely Rare"
    R6 = 13-30 known, "Very Rare"
    R5 = 31-75 known, "Rare"
    R4 = 76-200 known, "Very Scarce"
    R3 = 201-500 known, "Scarce"
    R2 = 501-1250 known, "Uncommon"
    R1 = over 1251 known, "Common"

    Hi, Les. as Russ said, R6 is 13-30, with high R6 being 13-20 and low R6 being 21-30. High R7 is 4-6 and low R7 is 7-12. The Pollock book was published in 1994, and the new Judd book just this past year, so the Judd book is more accurate. As well, The Society of US Pattern Collectors website has rarity figures for most Judd numbers. Saul Teichman updates the site, and there are very few, if any people who are any more knowlegeable. However, even these figures are not always accurate, because many of the figures for different metallic varieties are highly speculative. As an example, J356b/P426a is listed as R8, but I've seen and/or handled 4 or 5 different pieces in the last year alone.

    As for value, rarity is only one factor involved, as it is with regular issue coins. A huge factor is demand, which can have great influence on a market such as the pattern market, which usually has low mintage. For example, a high R7 Standard Silver quarter, such as a J-919, may bring less than half the money as a Washlady quarter (R6) in the same grade.

    Les - The J723 is listed as a high R7 in the new Judd book but I believe this is in error. The old Judd book had it listed as R5 and uspatterns.com calls it a R6. I have owned 2 different 723 and I have seen several others. The R6 rarity rating is probably closer to the truth. Still a rare coin and a beautiful design IMO. Whats the grade the one your looking at?

    I thought that they did rarity in the new Judd book by the approximate number of auction records?

    The new Judd book lists the 723 as a high R7 which is 4-6 known then they state the graded population of 10 coins. Currently PCGS has graded 7 and NGC has graded 6 for a total of 13 not counting resubmissions. I am not sure if the new Judd rarities are based on auction appearences or combined pops but it has always been pretty subjective. My gut tells me this is R6 for what its worth.image

    Boiler 78,

    The older Polluck book that Rkkay gave me lists the coin as a rarity 6.

    This is a pcgs pop 1 coin in proof 65 r & b that sold for 3680 including the juice at the A.N.R
    and is currently being offered by Legend with a much better picture then the Heritage picture [suprise] for about 1000 dollars more.

    If I were the old owner of the coin that got only about 3200 when [you subtract the juice] I would have been extremly angry considering the Heritage pic's, doesnt even look like the same coin, but it's a pop 1 in r & b so their is no doubt it's the same one.

    By the way, the Heritage A.N.R. also listed the coin in that auction as a r-6.
