1927 Proof Set - How Much Really?

On Sunday I realized £493 for the break up of a nDFC 27 proof set without the box. Book value of the boxed set in FDC is £325.

On Sunday at the Midlands Coin Fair I purchased another boxed set for £315. Better condition with only the odd sl. hairline.

Coins and the box will be broken and auctioned Thursday for 10 days @ 99p no reserve.

I noticed you did quite well on those 1927s. I was doing a little research on the threepence I have and saw yours going for ~£60. So I raised my price a bit. image

    Beautiful crown.

It's a wonder that there are any proof or mint sets from anywhere left from
the 20th century. Most of these will bring more money as singles than they
will as sets. At on point in time the 1980 US mint set with $4.82 face value
wholesaled at $4.60 but the total value of the coins in the set was nearly $6.
Even more surprising is that the best 1980 coins almost all come from the set.

Apparently this is caused by the demand for singles outpacing the rate at which
sets are cut and broken. Many times collectors will buy a set themselves to ob-
tain a single, but most believe this costs a lot of money or is some way sacrili-
    gious so won't do it.

Eventually intact sets are likely to have a premium but this may require many,
    many years.

    Lloyd:

Excellent question... I wish I could provide a reasonable answer. Everytime I try with respect to prices of British coins, I am wrong... sounds as if you did well. What would a decent 1902 set fetch with gold coins that are lightly hairlined? Is $2,400 too much? The silver coins are very nice and the case is acceptable.

That's the 13 coin matt proof set £5 to Maundy. Books at £1,750 which at the moment is around $3,250. So nFDC (say) would be good value (ish).

Break up in Britain would earn good money and beat that easily, especially with the exchange rate and the unrelenting appetite for gold and crowns. If I bought the set from you it would cost me just around £1,300. The thing is I don't know how an American would look at it. $2,400 means a lot less to me now than it did a year ago. If for instance, you broke the set and listed low start in dollars you would never reach the psychological level required to earn a profit. List in Sterling however and the profit would be guaranteed. For instance £95 sounds a reasonable number while the equivalent $175 sounds very high. This really matters - everyone thinks they can look past this but it's there in the back of your mind. To sum up, it's difficult to equate the currencies and book values.

It must be noted though that the 1902 (and 1911) is very different to the 27. The 27 has two jokers, namely the florin and the threepence. No currency issues were minted for this date in these denominations so the proof becomes the date filler. Given the popularity of the coins, this clearly contributes towards a hot environment with too many collectors chasing too few coins.

It's clear that this is not the case with the 02 and 11. The 02 especially is a very common currency date.

I think they might have been sovereign to maundy (books currently £700) though I don't know. I couldn't see a full set going for that amount.

MIght have been the Superior sale then - but they were both full sets. I was quite upset with myself because I didn't have the cash to buy one of them. 'Course I never expected them to close that low either image

Thanks for the comments Lloyd and I agree about the differences between the 1902 set and the 1927 set. I am alittle surprised though about the break up value being that much more. I still see this as a set that is not all that rare and that type of money can be used to finance coins that are truly tough to find.

    Monster Gold!!

this question was just brought to my attention..... There aren't many sets about that you can truly call FDC because only a dab with a tissue and you have a hairline or two.

    And MATT!!

    Love it.
