Guess the Peace $ grade (grade posted!!!!)

This coin is blast white and in a PCGS holder. I've taken the worse possible picture of the coin to try to show every last hit on it. Because it's a picture, I'll give you a little hint.... it's NOT AU...

If this is as bad as it gets, the coin looks pretty good.

I can't see the reverse. But from the obverse I'd call it an NGC MS-64.
A super reverse might get it a 65.

  • I'll list the hits too......

    OBV.
    1) squiggle in front of nose.
    2) 3 marks on neck
    3) Reed mark just above eye
    4) Small hit under "T"

    REV.
    1) 2 hits above "D"
    2) Small line through "it" in "united".
    3) little nick on "N" in "one"

To the naked eye you see 2 hits on the coin, one on the neck and the one on the eagle's breast.

biggreek.... it's in a PCGS holder.....

Oh, I didn't know there was a squiggle.

  • First of all - let me begin by saying that this is a very nice coin!

I see scuffing in the fields both in front of and in back of Francesca's bust, in addition to the hits you pointed out. Peace dollars seem to be very prone to marks because of the size of the coin and the open fields on the obverse, so for this reason I'm going to say MA64, though if you come back with MS65 I won't be surprised. She's a very pretty lady either way.

Looks to be 64 but wouldn't surprise me to see the answer as 63.

    Not a 65.

  • It seems to be MS64, or a super MS63.

Looks 64'ish to me. Looks to have typical luster. A 65 with those marks would have to have knock out luster and a fuller strike. If they stuck a 63 on that they should be shot.

  • MS60. I can see 5 hits

  • MS64. May bump to 65 for great eye appeal - perhaps if you sent it to me for closer examination....

I love showing this coin to people with tape over the grade....image It just goes to show you how strict they are on key dates.... this coin would be in a 63 holder if it were a "common" date.....

I would have to say that I haven't seen anything better in 3 years in a 61 or less holder.... so if anyone wants to give me graysheet bid for a 64......image

Yikes...I thought it was us 'collectors' who were undergrading coins.

PeaceMan: I enjoy purchasing undergraded certified coins like the 1928 Peace Dollar that's the subject of this thread. They are usually offered for sale at near the certified grade, which is usually a bargain compared to the price of the next higher (true) grade. image

Your MS-61 is so PQ that it looks like an MS-63 -- it's an MS-61 that's a "Shot 64" image

I guess I was wrong. Pure and simple. I agree exactly with Stuart's comment.

If the definition of MS-61 is "the grade next highest from the lowest mint-state possible grade"
I'd have to say that your coin is undergraded.
