Opus 224 GERMANY’S CRUCIFIXION (Deutschlands Karfreitag), 1919, Cast AE, 90.4mm
Recording the powers and forces responsible for Germany’s state of affair in 1919. The obverse is reserved for the internal forces tearing the last shred of cloth from Germania, the communists and social-Democrats. She is accused of her guilt (SCHULD), and the population is enticed to the general strike (GENERAL STREIK). On the reverse Goetz depicts the victors of the giant struggle of World War I. France’s Clemenceau and England’s Lloyd George throw the dice for Germania’s raiment as in the Gospel story of the crucifixion. America’s Wilson and Italy’s Premier Orlando look gloomily at the new danger coming up “Bolshevism” (written in the sky). Wilson’s holding a compass in his right hand indicates the tool necessary to cut up the countries of the defeated powers.

<< <i>The concept of Germania has been around for a long time and can be read about here, Germania. Just a WAG but I think "Fatherland" was instituted with the creation of theThird Reich. >>
The 1913 Defeat of Napoleon Commem uses the word Fatherland FYI.
<< <i>788....so I am about a tenth of the way complete on my set. >>
Wow! Is there a standard reference for them?
