Interested in the 1857-S S.S. Central America double eagle

I'm interested in eventually getting one of these due to its history.
I didn't get it when it first came out cause the price was artifically inflated.
But it's settled down a bit. What's the current market value for these?
Is it a good time to get it?

If anyone is selling, let me know.

I don't like the un-natural look of the these coins. I would think the premium for these coins will slowly dissapear over time because they are the most common date of the type in high grade -I don't see much upside myself. mike

Every one of them was "processed" which means conserved by pcgs, blah, thats why they look funny.

The people that bought them a few years ago can't be happy with their "investment" now.

The President claims he didn't lie about taxes for those earning less then $250,000 a year with public mandated health insurance yet his own justice department has said they will use the right of the government to tax when the states appeals go to court.

These coins may be interesting but, as has previously been noted, they don't have a natural look to them since they have been cleaned (conserved if you prefer). In addition, the coins from the new shipwreck that is currently being excavated could greatly increase the supply of this type Double Eagle. Time will tell on this. In any case, I suggest you pass on this for now and let the "marketing hype" premiums disappear.

In my opinion, the circulated graded SSCA $20's such as the AU-55 and AU-58 might finally be ripe for the picking.

They are not expensive, they look good for the grade and at least they are not graded as mint state which would satisfy any critic of the conserving program, and finally has already seen its marketing premium disappear for the most part.

There is little downside left at these levels. They can be obtained for under $2000.

    Upside? Limited as well.
