Mike Wheat Cards

Does anyone have any experience dealing with Mike Wheat cards out of Pittsburgh? If so, how would you rate their grading of raw cards and are you most certain that what they are selling is unaltered?

Thanks

Ron

Ron - there have been discussions on Mike Wheat and his grading on the Network54 board. I would check the archives there.
  • Thanks. I will have a look.

From my experience buying 1940 Play Ball cards, their grades are usually 1-2 grades higher than the grading companies with the occasional match (usually in the Ex range).

I did recently buy a Ex/Mt 1933 Tattoo orbit card from them that came back a PSA 7, so their standards may vary by set.

Do you get SCD? Mike Wheat advertised in SCD for years with a 10yrKrause publications award - I have never bought from him but on the other hand I have had really good fortune with award winners in SCD when it came to customer service/complaints/returns - not 100% but very happy.

I bought many raw Diamond Stars and Play Balls from Mike Wheat a few years back... eventually I graded nearly all I bought and was very happy. I can't recall any that graded below his grade description, but many that graded above like a 41 Playball Gomez he called EX+ that got a PSA 7 and a 35 Diamond Stars Traynor he called EX that also got a PSA 7... one caveat: I picked these cards in person at shows... and I recall seing some I thought were overgraded by his estimation.

He used to post decent pics of his stuff for sale on his website, if that helps.

Oh, I do recall my friend buying a NM-MT 51 Bowman Durocher that was clearly re-glossed with something. PSA would not slab it, but Mike made a full refund on it maybe 60 days later.

I bought 4 1954 Bowman FB Packers from the guy 2 years ago.

    Graded as 2 (7) and 2 (8).

He will provide a large scan.

    Loves me some shiny!
  • I have bought a few mid-grade 34's and I was happy with them. Quick and professional service. I would recommend them.
