Edited to say: Coin is ending on ebay tonight...last chance for those who are interested. It will probably be a long time until another one comes around. LINK
I just got a report with a 1973 D IKE Dollar in PCGS MS67 on it. It was no surprise as the coin is spectacular. Nearly perfect surfaces with great eye-appeal. The current pop is 9/0 (including this coin). Over 22,000 MS clad Ikes have been graded by PCGS, and only 74 have attained the grade of MS67 with none higher. It will be listed on ebay tonight. If interested, email me at: telecoin@adelphia.net

1973-D IKE 1.769 million minted with 74 in ms-67 and it goes for $5k. These were issued only in Mint sets.
I have a 1863 3c silver in PCGS PF 66CAM. Mine is the only Cam and only 8 others in 66 none higher. There were 460 proofs minted and 21,000 business strikes. So the total population is less than the graded pop of the 73-d IKE and I would be lucky to get $3k for my coin.
Who in there right mind would pay $5k for a coin that is in no way rare?
Based on the current submissions there is one MS-67 in every 300. Granted this # may be lower as only the best get submitted, but the true pop of MS-67 could well be over 1000. That sounds like a $50-$100 coin IMHO.

Don't forget to add popularity to your equation. Your math is accurate but your conclusion faulty because you're missing that one, important link to collecting.
There are more Collectors seeking super high grade Ikes on any given day than there are PR66 CAM Trimes. (That "injustice" has been expored many times on this forum.)
The MS67 grade is the Holy Grail of grades for clad business strike Ikes.

If I could afford to, meaning if I had an "expendable" 5 G's, I would buy it. But I don't and besides, I usually operate out of my left brain. I've been out of my right mind for quite a while now.
I guess just a personal preference but I would rather have a 150 yr old coin than one 30yrs. To each his own and thats what makes the world go 'round.
It will be very interesting to see in the next 20-30 yrs how the prices fair. I hope they both do quite well.
