I'm surprised at how many card shops don't like the idea of PSA or the idea of 'professional' grading. Most think they're above it. Can you imagine the surprised looks you'd get walking into a store with the closing price of this auction??! Guess they might consider going through those ol 1980 commons bins!.... (or maybe that should be left up to us!)

That's worked out quite well for me so far with my Phillies team sets ... and the shops are happy too, because some of their "dusty" material finally sells .
Cool Canuck with over 1600 transactions and 100% flawless feedback.I'm sure the customer will be a happy Bench owner as the centering looks straight.(Which is the next best thing when you can't find anything in the neighborhood of 45/55 to 50/50 period)
Sometimes it's hard to believe a card from this period would 9 because of the centering. Then you'll find out that it has all the other requirements for it to 9.Therefore it is.Sometimes you won't always knock a card because of centering when you want or need it.If it was the last card I needed I'd probably bid.
That 81 Bench's only rival in a 9 of this period is the Henderson. There are a million of with the same centering to the likes of the Bench but the demand and availability of the Bench has the world over a barrell.
I think RobE is referring to the 1980 Henderson. The 81 isn't very difficult. Personally, I think the 81 Fred Lynn is harder than the Bench, but if we're just talking HOFer's, then nevermind.

Currently collecting.....your guess is as good as mine.
I didn't think so. I sent in a few 81 Hendersons on a whim last year, and they all looked great. Got back two 8's, and a 9...which led me to believe that this might be a tough card. I know the 80 Henderson is tough (I am working on an 80 Registry set now, and I have a 9 Henderson, but I got a lot of 8's before that one). I was hoping I could turn that 81 Henderson over now, after seeing the Bench go for what it did...
I am the seller of the 1981 Bench and I'm not a Canuck, but from NYC. I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised at what that card sold for. It even went for more than my 1977 PSA 10 Lynn Swann.
I want to thank the board members for pointing out the rarity of that card. I went through countless 1981 Benchs and noticed that most were either off-centered or had a print smudge.
I also wanted to add that for all of you Johnny Bench fans out there, I am currently auctioning off a 1975 PSA 10 Gem Mint. The auction ends Thursday evening.

Hi Michael, you have something in common with Gator with the Bench 9s.Over the last couple years I learned a great deal about the difficulty of the 81 while dealing with trying to find an 80 in 9.A couple of the 80/81 collectors who I became friendly with used to exchnage horror stories about the two cards.
As for the Canadian comment I mistakenly thought where you noted ship to Canada was your location.
CTSOX,Playball was right I was compairing to the price of an 80 Henderson RC pricewise to the 81 Bench. They are the only two 9s I can think of from 80/81 in baseball that have a price demand this high.
