France 1838 King Louis VII Medal? Large Photos

This is all the info I have on the medal. AE 51mm Suite medal by Caque. King Louis VII (1120-1137). Proof(AU)

Can anyone please assist me that reads french I believe? I’d like to know what the front & back of this medal says. Or any other info that you guys may have on such a medal. I do not have a Krause book that covers this era. I tried to keep the images large so it would be easier to read. Thank You very much. In addition is this copper or brass?

Part of a series of medals produced 1836-1839 or so with the various Kings of France as its subject. Caque was a prominent engraver of the period that worked on the series.

  • I had it just about translated, but civitas beat me to it. Where I had problems are the same places where he has question marks also. I just don't use my French often enough these days.

    That is a great medal!!!

  • Those of you who collect medals can you please give me some idea what is a good price range for by such medals. I'd like to try and by more by this same guy. I don't know if I paid to much. Because I just saw him and I liked him I paid $32.50 without shipping added. I don't have a Krause book to compare what is reasonable price. Thanks again everyone for your help. And special thanks to PVC Free For bring me into the world of world coins. I like my new family a lot. Because everyone tries to answer my questions.

Under $50.00 seems quite reasonable for that medal. 51mm, nice and weighty, decent art with nice relief. Something tells me it might be a part of a set/series though, so you may find yourself with an irresistible urge to fill holes as time moves on. image

  • I already do feel the need to coplete the set. Lets hope I can find them and afford them.
    Thanks for the price range.

I would agree that you got a decent price. Unfortunately there really isn't the equivilant of a "Krause" for medals. I constantly watch eBay, Yahoo and few other sites for the types of medals I collect. I also bid on medals in a lot of mail order and online auctions from major auction houses. The result is that I have a pretty good idea of what a French Revolutionary and Napoleonic era medal should sell for. But I couldn't do much more than guess outside 1789-1815.Good luck on your collecting! image
