  • I'm thinking this is a Rome/Vatican copper coin with the Pope's name on the back? I'd say 1600's to 1700's or so.

Kudos, I would have taken a month research to get it. Took me 10 minute to go from the Top of the pictures to the Bottum of the Lastimage

Did anyone notice the old coat of lacquer on this coin? It's turned green. I decided to leave it on instead of removing it.

The name of the Pope is Innocent XI, and the coin was minted in the 13th year of his reign, so it puts the coin's date at about 1688, if I'm not mistaken. The coin is called a quattrino.

I am new to this Papal stuff, so I will defer to anyone with more knowledge than me.

Innocent XI 1676-1689 AE Quattrino Year XIII Berman-2156

It is interesting to note that Berman only lists this coin for years VII-XII. I have not looked at Krause, but I wonder if you have something new there Jester, perhaps something that experts like Berman should know about?

Hi Dead King! I'm certainly no expert, and hence know nothing about papal coins. It is interesting that you quote an expert who fails to list this coin. Please let him know about the existance of this coin, if you could. I will not go back on my word about giving it away, however, no matter how rare it might be. The new owner might get rich!!

By the way, it looks much better than in the scans.

Fascinating! For a moment there, I thought: Wow, what a case of verdigris!
