It's from Austria and it looks like copper, but I can't tell you much more than that about the coin (I'm at work and don't have any references here).

Austrian First Republic 1918-1938.

Cu/Sn 17mm 1.66g

These are surprisingly tough to find as type coins but they do show up
in poundage occassionally. Scarcer dates are available but are not often
seen due to lack of interest at least in this country. Uncs and gems tend
to be pretty elusive.

I'd guess this series was recalled and melted but have no confirmation of it.

This has a bit of wear on the highest parts, but still a lot of mint red luster.

Now, if the date were 1938, I'd be jumping around.

I personally find the 2 Groschens from the same period extremely cute. The "2" is a real blast

Philip, I haven't seen a 2 Groschen piece; I'll have to be on the lookout for one.

The 2g has a different design. It's a little easier in unc and gem but a little
tougher as a type coin. The toughie is the cu/ni 5g. It's undervalued in Krause
as are the 1g uncs.

I actually got a bunch of 2-s first and then a 1.

You are right about the 5 groschens, though - I only have one year, the first one (1930, iirc).
