GOO GONE OR ACETONE RESULTS edited *the debate begins*

Regarding my poblem with the coins I had which someone had put big ol' peices of scotch tape on them to hold them in their cardboard holders....
THe goo gone is good to go!!!! Excellent on the silver style coins but BEWARE... on the indian head coins I tried it on them and it left a green dusty looking residue as soon as they airdried... very quick indeed!!! I thought the green stuff was there to stay but I goo goned again and immediately rinsed them off in the acetone and WHALA!! Perfect!! (good thing I was experimenting on some bodybag material!) But just acetone alone took forever to get off the sticky stuff. Anyway I tried it several different ways and the best route is

silver or "white coins" - poor goo gone on the coin let sit for a couple of seconds then gently rub with finger then gently pat with soft cloth then airdry

copper or "brown coins" - goo gone applied the same way as above then immediate rinsing with acetone before it dries

Just thought you would all like to know

  • It has been recommended you roll a Q-tip on coin to absorb dissolved material. Any rub can leave a mark.
  • Thanks good idea!

I don't think you can just let the GooGone air dry. It's oily and all the stuff you dissolve with it is just going to get spread around the coin if you don't wash it off, even if you "pat" it dry. I understand that acetone isn't good for copper, by the way. I would be careful with this.

If you rinse use distilled water only!

  • HMMMM?!?! THere seems to be a bit of a difference of opinion here maybe we should do a poll? lol THis thread was done because of the responses I got from another thread here is that thread...

SO which is right? In an ideal world we wouldn't end up with tape on our coins but since it happens how should it be handled ...

    Let the battle begin...

You understand wrong. Acetone is as safe as water for copper and all other coins (unless they start making coins out of plastic).

Oops, actually I was thinking of MS70, although I have heard that acetone can affect the color.
  • I'm just about scared to use dip, acetone, or goo gone (all of which I have and are just waiting for the 'right' time to use it), since I read so much conflicting data.

The consensus is that Goo Gone is safe for copper Lincolns. Does the same go for copper Indians? How about copper nickel? What about silver?

I always thought acetone was safe for everything, but this post from coppercoins makes me hesitant to use acetone on copper.

    Let the debate continue.
