Pre auction viewing and Auction questions.

FairlanemanFairlaneman Posts: 10,423 ✭✭✭✭✭
Thanks for your answers in advance. The Portland ANA auction and show will be the first big show that will be attended and frankly I have no idea how to approach the Auction viewing and the Auction.

Heritage has a pre viewing on Monday and Tuesday of next week. Are all of the coins out on tables or do you ask to see certain items you are interested in ? Can you look at items you would like to see but have no interest in really bidding on ? Can you take your own coins in to compare to the coins you might be interested in for placing bids ?

The auction itself. I see that winning lots can be paid for on Friday and Saturday. What is used for payment, cash, credit card, check ? If you win a lot via the internet can this lot be paid for and picked up in Portland or is it done through the usual system if you were not present at the auction ?

One last thing. Would it be better to find someone other than myself to bid on the lots wanted ? I suppose the regulars could spot a newbie from a mile off and maybe this would make a difference on how some bids were placed.

Thanks Again.
Ken

These are great questions! The FUN 2004 show was my first big show, and I had many of the same questions and apprehensions.

The coins will be in trays sorted by lot number. If you are interested in, say, merc dimes, there will be one or more trays of merc dimes that you will ask to see. You can thumb through the coins and look through as many or as few as you care to. There will be tensor lighting and seating provided. I did not take any coins in to compare, but I do not see any problem with it. There will be someone casually observing you while you look at the coins and that person will check to see that all the lots are back in the box.

I was too afraid to bid live but did win two small lots in auctions that I did not attend. The Green Pond Dahlonega collection auction, which I did attend, was very disappointing for me. Not only could I not afford any of the coins I would have wanted (as expected), it was over and done with very quickly in perfunctory fashion. I had imagined that there would be a bit more fanfare.

    Good luck and have fun,

every coin has a lot number. you are given a sheet with lots in groups and you tell them the lot numbers you want to see (they are in boxes of about 50 slabs so if you want one coin from a group you will get to see the whole box. You cannot whip out coins to compare as they might think you are trying to substitute coins.

If you pay at the auction you can pick them up there. I assume cash and credit card get immediate delivery at the show. They might want to hold the coins for a check to clear but I am not sure on that one.

I doubt there will be that many bidders so the "stick the newbie" might not apply, not that it would ever apply anyway. I could bid for you if you really want as no one messes with me at the auctions image

Thanks for your answers in advance. The Portland ANA auction and show will be the first big show that will be attended and frankly I have no idea how to approach the Auction viewing and the Auction.

Heritage has a pre viewing on Monday and Tuesday of next week. Are all of the coins out on tables or do you ask to see certain items you are interested in ?<<<< They come in boxes of about 30-50 lots; you can look at whatever you want; you check out the box>>>>> Can you look at items you would like to see but have no interest in really bidding on ? Can you take your own coins in to compare to the coins you might be interested in for placing bids ? <<< I have never seen anyone do that; if you wish to compare; I would ask in advance; obviously there are concerns about switching coins>>>

The auction itself. I see that winning lots can be paid for on Friday and Saturday. What is used for payment, cash, credit card, check ? <<< Check instructions in catalogue; arrangements can be made if you establish credit in advance>>>>If you win a lot via the internet can this lot be paid for and picked up in Portland or is it done through the usual system if you were not present at the auction ? <<<They are quite flexible; see prior comment>>>

One last thing. Would it be better to find someone other than myself to bid on the lots wanted ? <<< Not really unless you don't trust your self control; I personally prefer to view myself and bid by proxie; that is not the usual response; you lose some that you want but if you set your limit you don't pay more>>>>I suppose the regulars could spot a newbie from a mile off and maybe this would make a difference on how some bids were placed. <<< Not a big deal,IMHO>>>>

<<< It is an interesting experience; I found my first auction a disappointment; not at all like a TV art auction; lots of old men spending money; enjoy>>>

    Thanks Again.

Bidding live at auction is an experience you do not want to miss.
A few rules to live by:
    1) Do not bid on anything that you have not had the opportunity to view. If you decide later that you are not happy, it will be presumed that you had ample opportunity to make an informed decision.
    2) Decide how much you are willing to pay before the auction. Do not bid more. (NOTE: In the event you are unsuccessful, assess the validity of your maximum bids after the sale. Do not get caught up in the moment. For most coins, you will get another chance in the near future.)
    3) Arrive before the lots you are interested in hit the block, i.e., early enough to get a feel for the flow of the action.
    4) Follow these rules and you will have no reason to sweat. No one will know that you are a newbie.
  • FYI,

I received a flyer a couple days ago for the Oregon State Spring Show. It states that there is "Heritage Lot Viewing" at the show.

Show is the Tues. & Wed. before the ANA and is at the Holiday Inn Airport.

Let me know if anyone needs more info...

Ken: I doubt any coin auction company will accept credit cards as payment for auction lots. If you want to pick up your coins after the sale, you need to prearrange credit.

    Heritage accepts credit cards. >>

Actually they're website says they only accept credit card payment up to $10,000. Not that I've ever come close to that being a problem!
  • BTW, I'm also going to the Portland show, and going to the Heritage auction is one of the main reasons I'm going. I've won coins from them over the Internet but have never been to a live auction and am interested in seeing what it's like. I'm a little disappointed in the selection at this auction, but I still found one or two pieces I might place bids on...

IIRC the cost to pay with a credit card at Heritage is borne by Heritage and NOT the consignor.
