Time Capsule

We had some major plumbing problems at our house in which we needed to dig a 4x4 hole in the foundation under a room in our house. Too make a long story short, I thought it would be a neat idea to throw a "time capsule" in the hole before we cover it up with dirt, then concrete, then carpet. My family wrote a brief story, put in some pictures, some newspaper clippings, coins, and other items. I threw in a recent Sports Illustrated issue discussing steriods in sports and some random baseball cards such as Roger Clemens Topps RC (O/C) and base cards of stars like Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Mark Prior, Cal Ripken, etc. Thought it would be neat if someone happens to find it in the distant future. Has anybody else done things like this before?
Looking for Los Angeles/California/Anaheim Angels in PSA 8 or better

I did back in 1985. I wrapped some cards and coins in plastic wrap and then proceeded to put them into an empty 1985 Fleer box. I remember one of the cards being an early 80's Pete Rose. Anyway, loose plastic wrap isn't very good protection, and neither is a cardboard box put straight into the ground, especially during those cold and wet winters in Pennsylvania. I was 13 and, it certainly seems, pretty dag stupid for thinking this time capsule would last more than two months. Anyway, I know where it is, and I'm sure the coins are still salvageable. Maybe one day I'll go back and dig them up.

Then, a little over a year later, this time, fifteen years old, I wrote a small note concerning the Mets-Red Sox World Series, and wedged it under one of the metal staircases in my High School. I'm sure it's still there, but the only person who can ever find it is me.

  • Apparently, when my grandpa was a kid, he made up a "time capsule" of Goudy Ruths, Play Ball Gehrigs, and 52 Topps Mantles. He put them into a steel cylinder with a rubber seal so that the cards stayed in pristine condition. After he died last month, I was cleaning out his attic and found the capsule. Sent the cards to PSA and they all came back 9s and 10s. Prepare to see them next month when I leave my wife and she sells them on ebay to get back at me for a bargain basement price not knowing their true value.

In 2001, we had our house rennovated and put on an addition. I made up a large Tupperware box with Red Sox cards (Nomar, Manny, Pedro), a letter, family pictures, Time Magazines, CDs and floppy disks, an old computer mouse, and pretty much any pther items that'd be fun for someone to "discover" in 50 or 100 years. We put it into a walled in space in the third floor of our home.

In the late 1960's we built a rock wall in the front of our row home in Philadelphia. We did a time capsule and I know their were baseball cards in it along with a lot of other things I can't remember; I was about 8 years old. The cards were probably in bad condition though. We have since moved from that house and I am always tempted to ask the owner if I could did it up from about 2 or 3 feet of dirt. Their may be no value to the items in there except huge sentimental value.
