We'll see. I bought one of his "Gem BU" Morgans last week. As soon as I get it, I'll post pictures of it here.

  • Yikes! Even more photos take at extreme angles. Funny how he can seem to get up close and personal on that '55 DD, but can't seem to shoot straight at anything else image

Let us know. He does have over 2000 member feedbacks with only 1 neg. Has over 10k positives total so he has return customers.

    Tom
  • Has anyone bought from this seller? His coins look great and his feedback is 100%. Does he actually sell the coins in the pics or are they just for show?
  • I couldn't resist. I sent a message as follows:
Would like to see a shot of the reverse please. A closeup showing that FLB. Close, like the '55 DD.
    Straight on, no angles.

    Thanks in advance.

Will I get that FLB reverse shot? Will I get a response at all?
Stay tuned for the exciting conclusion....

Edited to add: Hmm.. a tad dyslexic (FLB?), but I think he'll understand.

As soon as I get it I'll let everyone know. I think I paid around $40 for it, so as long as it's a 64 I'll be happy. If it's a banged up low MS coin, I won't be. I would guess with his feedback that he must be sending out coins worth the bid, I can't imagine overgrading on a regular basis without getting some complaints.
  • We bought coins from him, they're breathtaking.

You mean breathtaking in a good way, I presume?

  • I returned all of the MS 65+++ Ikes I got from him. They were BU but several scratches as in MS 63 or so. He did return half of the postage.

There is a previous mention of him a few months ago and it seemed his lincolns were pretty fair according to others.

You might check the advanced section under Papa Tony.
  • Some of the coins are nice, but they over grade a lot.....

  • Am I the only one who noticed?? Papa Tony joined the forum a few days ago. I asked him if he was Papa Tony in this thread:

    EagleEyeEddie Thread

......he never responded. Is it the same Eagle Eye Eddie on eBay who is selling Papa Tony's coins?

I sold him some coins, many of his mid to late 30's lincolns. Does this make me Papa Tony? Generally his Lincolns are pretty good. They grade as stated for the most part from PCGS. Some may come in a point lower, I pulled 2 49-P lincolns in 66RD. I suspect his Lincoln stock is pretty much toast by now.

We'll see how his Morgans stack up when I get the one I bought.

I bought from this seller once. The coin I received was not the same coin that was photographed in the auction (not nearly as nice). I gave a neutral feedback for using stock photo's without mentioning it. He gave me a retaliatory negative.

    I would avoid!!!!

I knew going in that he uses stock photos. I wouldn't give him a neutral or a negative unless the coin is seriously less than described, and he refused to refund. Did you try to work it out with him or did you just drop the neutral on him without trying to work it out?
  • I bought some Lincolns from him about 2 years ago. Nothing to brag about!!!

K6AZ; No where in his auction did he mention stock photos and he hyped how nice the coin was (and it was not nice). There really was not much to talk about. I thought a neutral was appropriate so I gave it.

I believe a neutral is exactly what this kind of auction deserves. A neutral is not a negative. It is just saying that you were not positively impressed with the transaction. I felt that other buyers should know what was being done and that if I did not leave some less than positive comment they would not. The retaliatory negative just showed the individuals character in my opinion and I still feel it is more of a badge of honor than anything else.

You didn't answer my question. Did you contact him and tell him you were not happy? Or did you just drop the neutral with no communication?
  • DRGDRG Posts: 817
I did answer the question. "There really was not much to talk about. I thought a neutral was appropriate so I gave it." (no I did not contact him).

I did not want to talk about it and then give him a neutral and like I said I wanted other buyers to know that he was using stock photo's.

Hyping a coins quality, using a nice stock photo and then sending below average quality coins, is not an honest endeavor.

Do you think this was wrong of me.

Yes, I do. No seller is perfect, and a lot of high volume sellers use stock photos. Apparently, listening to others who have bought from him, if you aren't happy he will refund your bid plus postage, and has even sent these people freebies on top. To just post a neutral without trying to work out the transaction to your satisfaction is not right in my opinion.
  • DRGDRG Posts: 817
Most sellers are either clear that they are using stock photos or do not hype the quality of the coin.

A random picture of a coin with a statment that "You will receive a similar coin" or something to that effect, is expected.

A close up of a high quality coin with a discussion about how it was picked out and saved because of its beauty with the intent to send an average quality random coin is not acceptable.

The fact that if you complain he buys your silence with a refund does not make him a good guy.

I respectfully disagree with you. A neutral was appropriate and a negative would not have been out of line.

    DRG,

I 100% agree with your neutral of this seller. Bidders deserve to know that the coin they're bidding on is the coin pictured. The seller wasted your time and misrepresented the coin.

If I find someone using my pictures from my server I replace the pic with this image of the smae name and they are really surprised!

How can a proof Franklin be graded MS anything? "Papa Tony", sounds like a pizza place.

Also, I agree with DRG. Too many slippery sellers use this tactic. Sell overgraded raw junk to everyone. The 1/2 who complain get a no questions asked refund. Those who do not know to complain get hosed. The slippery seller only needs a certain percentage of hits to win. Offering refunds does not make a seller a good guy. The coin mags are filled with multi-page ad dealers who do the same thing. Avoid them.

I agree with DRG on this one.
  • Right on DRG! Only a scumbag would leave a neg after getting a nuetral.

I say, fork Papatony and the horse he rode in on! I shy away from any auction using that type of subterfudge (."..not my coins, but old Tony's...) or (" I don't know anything about coins, but I inherited these from my dear old Dad...") . 99% of the time these are scammers.

"I conservatively will grade this coin at Proof 68 or better..........Any apparent marks are due to the reflection of the print I used to highlight the mirror-surface nature of this GEM and are not on the coin itself......Take a look at the photos below and judge for yourself.....This coin is much whiter than in the photo...."

Now I'm wondering if DRG did the right thing with only a NEUTRAL. If he is indeed substiting the coin in the photo without stating as much, he deserves a NEG!

When value is so heavily dependant on condition as is the case for mint state coins, to substitute the coin imaged in the auction is downright fraudulent. I believe it's called bait and switch?
