Martin Coles Harmon bought the island of Lundy from England. In the process he declared himself a soveriegn country and as such had the right to mint his own coin. He did so, creating the Puffin and the 1/2 Puffin, using the bird that the island was famous for on the reverse of the coin and his own image on the obverse of the coin. This upset the people in power in England who did not think that Lundy was a soveriegn nation so they sued Mr Harmon for violations of the English Coin Act (i.e. minting coins w/o permission of the government). Mr Harmon fought the government thru at least 1 appeal, but in the end, he lost the battle and had to pay the British government something like 5 pounds in damages for minting his own money. He also had to stop minting the coins as part of the settlement.
Since the coins were only minted for 1 year and there were only 50,000 of each denomination minted, they are pretty scarce and command a reasonable premium on thier prices when they become available (esp. for the BU and near BU examples of the coins).
As a side note, there was a special 50th anniversary issue minted that contains 2 of each of the coins - 1 set in bronze and 1 set in CuNI, but since these were actually minted just for collectors and were never intended to be 'real' puffin coins, most of the books on the subject discount them as 'not real coins'. The special sets, even tho discounted by the serious books, command about the same premium as the original coins (most of the sets that I have seen sell in the range of $60-$70). I have not been able to find a number on how many of the sets were issued, but I do know that they are pretty difficult to locate.
(How's that for my 1200th post!?!?! )

Would have been great if you did a 1.5 Puffin giveaway plus a few modern sets for the runners up.
I bought another two of these on Sunday. Both BU - the 1/2 is a gem and definitely stays but the 1 has a few contact marks. I'll be looking to improve on the latter.
I'm pretty shook up that these didn't sell (yeah sure).... But they'll certainly hit the spot on the great bay of eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Scarce bunch and not the sort of thing collectors let go of too easily.

Actually, I am in the market for a full red Puffin - I have both in RB and BR and the 1/2 in RD, but not the Puffin...
