I got a couple of surprise checks in the mail today - a settlement from some lawyer who filed a class action suit against a public company for some kind of securities fraud. These things are always found money, even though I think the law firm is the only one making out well.

Cool! Maybe I'll get something...from PCGS...

The kicker is that the submission wasn't even eligible for the guarantee! Here's the story.

The guarantee program kicked in on 4.1.03. This submission arrived at PCGS 3.5.03, prior to the program starting. Grades posted on 4.8.03, though. But, it should not have been eligible.

In May I got a credit memo in the mail for $60. I knew it was incorrect, so I called PCGS and told them that. They said they'd check on it and get back to me. They didn't get back to me, and in June I got a statement showing a negative $60. So I called them again, and again told them that I was not owed the money.

Since I didn't have it coming, I tossed the credit memo and thought nothing more about it until this check came in. So, I called them again today and, once again, tried to explain that I'm not entitled to the money. They INSISTED that I am, so screw it, I'm keeping it.

Turnaround time for refund checks is longer than for coins...

But not by much...
